Did my first contes this weekend

Just want to start off by saying I had a great time and all the people I met there were great too. I will defiantly be there next year. It was held in Kenton MI, and was put on by the Ontonagon Valley Sportsman Club. There were 70+ guys (about 25 teams).

This was a late season hunt and most areas were hard to get too (because of the deep snow), and like use a lot of guys had already burnt out most of there areas. The weather on Friday was pretty good, but Saturday and Sunday got really windy (20+ mph winds out of the east). Friday I saw 2 and got one yote, but my uncle and I came up dry on Sat. & Sun.

The results:

1st- 6 yotes
2nd- 1 yote and biggest yote
3rd- 1 yote
4th- 1 yote
We took 5th place with 1 yote. They only payed 4 places, but we did have the smallest yote which was good for $50.00. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

No fox or bobcats were taken.

This was my first contest and I had a blast. I think I hunted harder in the 3 days than I think I have ever hunted before, and I don't regret a minute of it. It was worth it just to meet and talk to all the guys out there.

Good for you great. Glad to hear you had a fine time. Know that's a pretty good hump for you down Kenton way. There are a few choice spots though in the swamps along the way. How long were you squatting on your sets? Know that damn wind had to play hell with you too.

Riccu,
Had a great time, and yes it's fare but not that bad (about 45 minutes) and worth it. We did check out the 16 road on the way out and it looks to have some promise. We talked to a few people out there and some of them hunt it, but not on our side, so first thing next fall we might take a scouting trip.

On friday I was at each set 20-30 minutes, but on Sat.-Sun most of my stand lasted about 15-20 minutes. I know I should stay for 30, but with the wind I figured that my sound was not carrying very far and if they were comeing it would be quick. The yote I got Friday was shot only about 300 yards from my first set. I stayed 25 minutes on my first set then moved about 300 yards down toward a thicker area and he came in right after my first call with the hand call.

Wish you would have been with us on Sat. My uncle ran accross a big bobcat track that was not even an hour old, and he said it was one of the biggest he has ever seen.

I think we our pretty much done for the year, but if I get board I may go a couple of more times.

I too am one to call it a season come March. Breeding season is pretty much over and have to give them time to pop out those pups. Our future for hunting you know. Gives you plenty of time to do your homework for next year. Reflect on those mistakes and what you have learned. Next year will be a new year for me too. I ought to be pretty well prepared for the season. Take care great and don't be a stranger here.

Great Hunter-- Thank for the great review of the Predator Hunt. This project of the OVSC, Ontonagon Valley Sportman Club has been a sucess for the club and generally well reviewed. Do you have any suggestions to improve it.

Hey loopsabt, I think you guys did a great job, and I don't have any suggestion (if it's not broken don't fix it). If the weather would have been on our side I think there would have been more animals taken, but I had a blast anyways. I will be a little more ready for next year.

We will probably try to keep prize money about the same but give out more places. The idea is to keep more people involved. Last weekend I got a 35 lbs male in real good shape. Good Huntin from downtown Bessemer.
