Go to Wally and get a 4 gallon jug... or just guesstimate in the 5 gallon jug, save your money, and stop being so picky!

you fill the 5 gal. jug up then dump that into the 3 gal. jug.

This leaves 2 gal. in the 5 gal jug.

Empty the 3 gal.
Then put the 2 gal. remaining in the 5 gal jug into the 3 gal jug leaving 1 gal of open space (in the three gallon jug).

Fill the 5 gal. jug and then use it to fill the remaining 1 gal in the 3 gal jug. This leaves exactly 4 gallons /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Math /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif : 5-3=2 3-2=1 5-1=4

Using geometry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif :

A: Measure the distance from your hip bone to the ground. You then take this number times 3.1421. Then take this number and divide it by 2.

B: Take the two jugs and each one equadistant from the side of the person asking the questions legs. You then divide this number by 2. Draw a straight vertical line upwards.

You then swing your foot so it covers the exact distance calculated in A along the straight line found in B. This gives the person that originally asked the question what they deserve /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You could also:

Fill the 3 gal jug & pour into the 5 gal jug. (leaving 2 gal void).

Refill the 3 gal jug and pour 2 gal to finish filling the space in the 5 gal jug. (Leaving 1 gal in 3 gal jug)

Empty the 5 gal jug completly & pour the 1 gal into the 5 gal jug. (leaving 4 gal void)

Refill the 3 gal jug & pour into the 5 gal jug (already containing 1 gal)

Fill the 5 gal jug put the 3 gal jug inside the 5 gal jug and that leaves 2 gallons in the 5 gal jug do this twice.
