Dilema with Savage 112

Here we go. I have somewhat of a dilema on my hands. I currently shoot a Savage model 112 varmit that I ordered from the factory as a barrled action only. I was assured by the smith I ordered it from that Savage would actualy put a "premium" barrel on it when you bought it that way. I have no idea if that was true but this thing shoots very well. I bought this gun about 12 years ago but it hasn't had to many rounds through it. The caliber is 22-250. The gun sits in a Stockade stock with a Rible Basix trigger. It shoots well but this thing is a beast. This a "LONG ACTION" rifle. I don't think Savage made short action back then.

Now, I fell in love wih the new Savage Predator. It just feels like a carry gun should. I'm not sure of the weight but I know it's a heck of a lot lighter than my 112. Here is the dilema, I want the Predator in 22-250 as it will be used for coyotes only. I would love to buy a new 204 so I thought hey, could I ever turn this 112 in to a heavy barreld 204? Would the long action of the 112 work for a prairie dog shooting 204? Thoughts, comments? I'm open to anything, fire away!!! Just to save some response time for you, I do not want the Predator in 204.

Why not? If you do not need the magazine and are single loading just get a .223 benchrest follower. You could make a spacer for the rear of the magazine well so there is not a hole although it probably already has one being a 22-250. My .243 110 is that way. Change the bolt face and maybe the pin as some of the firing and retaining pins were different back then. I think for the cost of a barrel and $50 Sharp Shooter Supply could hook you up with the exact pieces you need. I changed a .243 over to .223 in about 30 minutes although is was a short action. The firing pin parts are the only issue.
