DIY Decoy

Thanks to a PM member I got a coyote template. I ordered a few different types of shotgun loads to test. Incase you don't know, "a few" differnt coyote loads will run you about $125!

Next I mobbed the local grocery stores for all their cardboard. Spent a couple hours cutting out 20 coyote targets, and now I'm just waiting for the ammo to come in. Was in the garage earlier today looking at my stack of flat coyotes, and got an idea... About 8 attempts at a paint job later this is what I came up with. I've named him Wiley! Thinking about giving him a try this season as a decoy. Anyone else have any luck using coyote decoys?

I saw another post where someone was using a silhouette type decoy for foxes and coyotes. Two tips for you. First, was his tip - make your decoys small, and in a submissive posture. You don't want a possible taker to become intimidated and head for the hills. Second, is a thought that I had. Think about placing silo decoys for geese. You want them in 90 degree staggerings, if you have enough you can put a few at 45s too. When you move to the side of them it looks like they are moving. Now in yote decoys I don't think this will matter, since I think more than 2 decoys will be intimidating. Maybe more than 1, I'm not sure. Maybe try them in a seated pattern, rears together, at 90 degrees from each other. This way they will be able to see a broadside of one of them from 360 degrees. This would take more experimenting, but just a thought. If you're worried about intimidation, maybe go for a fox instead of a yote.

As a decoy, you may want to drop the tail in a more submisive posture. Like it is, it's an aggressive stance in the canine world. A dog approaching my yard with his tail like that would get dogpiled by my pack.

I kind of thought about that after I posted. Thinking about cutting the tail off and rigging a way to adjust the angle of it. Just got off the phone with one of my old coon huntin buddies, seems they've been having some trouble with two coyotes getting after their hounds right up the road from my house. Wiley might get a chance to get in the woods one evening this week if the rain holds off!

Thanks for all the input guys!!

Certainly an interesting idea you're working on. Good luck and keep us posted. I used a couple of goose feathers on a string of fishing line that did the trick for a recent coyote. Held her attention very well.

I have had good luck with the Yote Coyote decoy by Edge Expedite. I usually hang something fuzzy out of his mouth making a realistic scene. What is ironic is I have used the extra tail I have for him as the fuzzy thing in his mouth, and it works well. It is comical to watch a big old male lay his ears back and raise his hackles when he sees that invading coyote with one of his snacks. The red fox decoy that Edge makes works good with the coyote decoy too.
