can coyotes swim across a canal (cemet banks 15 yards wide 20'deep 2to3mph curent) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I quit being surprised a long time ago. They are truely amazing at times with their abilities.

Side note; I'd say if there was a farm cat on the other side. That yote could/would cross in record time, for a free-lunch.

Who knows, if he/she is hungry enough or territorial or curious, maybe. Sometimes they won't come in on dry land, go figure. Trying doesn't hurt though.

would one come acoss to a call

Unlikely. Giving the choice, I think they'd take the bridge. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I called a pair of coyotes across a canal just like that once. They were both still dripping wet when I shot them. So I guess they can if they want to.

Of course they can swim, they're dogs. Wild coyotes won't go into water unless they have to, but are naturally adept at swimming. I raised 6 coyotes and took them to the beach about 3 times a month. They would follow me into the water in a heartbeat. But they weren't raised in the wild, either.

I would imagine that coyotes spend more time in the water than most of us realize. Now that I have seen Cal's new video, the coyotes will probably break their own necks or have heart attacks in attempt to get to my call. Most of you don't have this video yet, because it ain't available. It is coming real soon. Until then, I have the video and you guys don't. Boy are you guys ever jealous of ME, Har-Har. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was on a 80' fishing boat early one morning headed to Catalina island on a fishing trip. Saw a shark eat a swimming coyote out about 5 miles at sea. Not only can they swim good, they make good shark bait.

First off, Danny, I know people that would get really miffed at you for throwing that poor coyote overboard that far from shore.

Second, I've seen more than one that don't need to swim. The &$^*#@(@s can probably walk on water if they wanted.

I hunt along a canal and there are heavy steep trails that are alomost staight down into the canal that they use. I checked the trails in the winter (even when the canal wasn't frozen)coyotes and deer cross it a lot. You can even see the other side that they go up . I think it's they're escape out.

This is a photograph a Wolf swimming across a salt water channel about 1 mile wide. I took this photograph while on a fishing trip in Alaska. If this wolf swam such a huge distance, with current, I'm sure a coyote can swim a small channel or even a small body of water.

They swam across the Mississippi once.

Nah, they took the paddle wheeler riverboat (hidden in the chicken coop). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
