Do I need a external speaker

Guys I have the FX5 and do a lot of crow hunting with it. I have thought about buying the external speaker and was wondering if it really helps. I don't mind wagging the fx5 around and wouldn't mind the speaker, but does it improve calling in the crows RIck

I don't know about your area Rick, but I have hunted them in SE KY in the mountains and I just use my FX5 and it is loud enough to call them in here with no problems. I had thought about getting the SP55 but don't think I need it here.

I don't think it can hurt. The Sp-55 really blasts the sound out there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I do have some open country in my parts and it can get windy, so the extra punch for me is great. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You will really appreciate the sound level when you get a couple hundred yards out in front of your speaker and hit the remote.

We usually are sitting behind the caller and making judgements about the sound level, go stand in front of it and get an appreciation for what that unit will put out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Better yet, yes get the speaker and play both the FX5 and the speaker at the same time with the speaker facing opposite directions or 90degs off.

Crapshoot and I did this several times on our hunt and WOW!!!!!

I actually got the idea from someone here, but I can't remember who.

Multiple times we had a situation that had an open valley in front of us or to the side and a really nice canyon or wash on the other side or straight out that we wanted the sound to reach in the wind. We would aim the SP-55 upwind and the horn of the FX5 in the direction of the canyon or wash and the amount of noise it created was amazing.

On one stand (it's on video) I couldn't get the call shut off in time and we ended up with a big female standing 2yds behind the FX5 and SP-55 while cranked up to 40 on Waning Jack. She died right there. I guess maybe if it wasn't so loud, she would have been within 1yd of the call. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I use the front speaker on my FX5 and the SP-55 speaker on every stand I make. It spreads the sound out much better than one speaker.
