Do Scope Mounted Spotlights Work?

I live in Ohio and can't hunt from a vehicle at night, so I must stick to hunting on the ground. I can't always get someone to go with me and have had real trouble trying to hold a spotlight and shoot at the same time. I have seen scope mounted lights but aren't sure how well they work and how far the light actually reaches. Any help would be appreciated!

ajshoots,
If you try one of the scope mounted lightforce hunter units, you'll be amazed at how far that light will reach and how easy it is to see through. One thing to consider though is to make sure you have something to rest your rifle on or a pivoting bi-pod. Your shoulders burn out pretty quick trying to hold the rifle and scope out for scanning.

Light force scope mounted lights is the way to go. You will not be disappointed. I have used it as a shooting light as well as a scanning light. Just get a dimmer switch as well.

IMHO, scope lights are a godsend for the solo hunter. At least some are. Like others have said, the king of scope lights is the Lightforce 170, but it comes at a price.

If you want to go another route, just make sure that you get a scope light that operates on a 12V battery. Experience has shown me that the 6V models do not last that long at all. Especially in cold weather.

I use a Stoney Point Monopod for night shooting. It allows me to stand up against a tree or tall weedline, and scan the area very well with out wearing my arms out trying to hold the rifle unsupported.

The best light for that situation is a light force. I have the 170. It is the only way to go for the solo hunter. I used a stream light HP for scanning for eyes. When I have eyes I put the light force on them. Don't waste your money on the cheap stuff. If you get the bug you will end up buying the right stuff any ways. Do it right the first time.

I have bought enough cheap stuff to buy the current setup a couple of times over. Wish I would have listed the first time.

I have identified a coyote in an open field at 600 yards with the light force. It is clear crisp light. If you get one you will not be disappointed! This is one of the few products tat I feel safe saying that!

ajshoots,
You can obviously see that the LightForce 170 setup is the way to go. Everybody speaks the truth on this thread and it's worth it to save the bucks and pony up for the best in this case. If you hunt really cold weather (-30 below and colder) put hand warmers around the battery in the cordura case and it'll give you much more life out of it.

scope mounted is good for shooting... we do our scanning with a hand held or head mounted light...

Yeah, I have one but we aren't allowed to attach it to the gun or scope here, so we have to bring a partner or attach it to a dowel/hold it alongside the gun. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. They are thinking about changing the law here but it will take some time I think.

I currently use a Vector mil candle power spot light and an optronics 100yder in tandem. I sometimes hunt solo and the set up has brought some success. How much do the lightforce scopelights go for?
