Do you bring Fido on hunts?

I have a new puppy and I've been thinking of taking him along on some hunts as well. Do you think that a dog helps or hinders your success? He's looking like he will be a fine bird dog but I was just wondering how many other folks take Fido along on coyote stands?

I have heard of the "Dogging Coyotes" tapes but haven't seen them. But I did see on T.V. once this guy had his dog run out and basicly lure the coyotes into range, I couldn't believe it! This dog harrassed a whole pack of four or five yote's into range (run and stop)and his master shot them all, while the rest seemed more interested in Fido, and just stood around waiting to get shot. What are your folks thoughts on this.

I haven't uesd my dogs as decoys(Amer-Pits,they want to kill them as bad as I do),but I have read about many that do. My advise to you is make dam sure that your dog will come on command and don't ever let him/her out of your site. Yotes will lure your dog in to a trap just like the one that you are setting for them. With a little work, you can train your dog to be a good decoy. Just make sure that your confident he/she will return. You can teach them to return to a sqweak or other sound that wont alert the yotes. Wish you luck.

All the coyote hunters I know from my area, using dogs, use greyhound or greyhound mixes to run down coyotes. Coyotes cannot outrun a greyhound out in the open. The problem with this type of hunting is that the hunters often shoot .22 long rifle ammunition into brush and draws to initially flush a coyote. My brother and a friend almost got shot by one of these types of "hunters".

I have also heard of using dogs as lures, but haven't seen this done in Kansas or Nebraska. Sounds like something different to try.

I'm not talking about running em down but more like this. The dog goes out and see's the yote's, sticks his tongue out and says "neener, neener, na na na." Runs a little closer to Master and stops to make sure the yotes are still following and maybe a few quick barks for good measure. Repeat as neccesary until in range. Shoot all yotes one at a time while they stand around wondering how in the hell this dog is making thier buddies drop like that! What do ya think about that???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Its almost like you said Krusty. Just the sight of youre dog walking around in their territory will get em agitated. Works best in spring time though. Anyone who wants to bring their dog or wants to learn about howling should see Dogging Coyotes 1 and 2. Theres really nothing els like thoes videos.

This subject has reared its head a time or two in the past. Used to be a couple of guys here that were "real" dog fellas, ADC types. They all agreed with my opinion that dogs are for using in spring/summer for denning work. In winter time calling situations, the dogs bring nothing to the table except a distraction when the coyote is all ready in front of you, because of the distress calls. A percentage of the time, interesting reactions occur, but a higher percentage of the time, the dog runs the coyote off. Always figured a guy does good to call four coyotes per ten stands....on average that is. A dog will aid you maybe 2 out of 10 coyotes, and chase off the other 8......doesn't add to the equation does it:) A good dog, in a good dog box at the truck, will aid you far better for finding cripples if your concerned with harvesting the fur, than they will for "decoying" coyotes in the winter.

I think the dog thing works for sure but it has its down side. Almost everytime I take my beagles out I see yotes. I think the yotes know my dogs are running rabbitts and come in looking for a meal.
But its kind of hard to get a shot when a yote pops up right in the middle of 6 beagles. Keep a close eye on your dog. I have a little runt that I love and the yotes seem to pick her as the one to get. I don't know how many times she has come running to my feet with a yote hot on her tail. It just dosn't make for good shootin.
I was out the other day and here comes my little runt barking and running full bore. My eyes were behind her waitin for the yote and a rabbitt almost ran over my feet. No yote dogs just runnin rabbitts like they should. Those damn yotes have almost ruined me.
I think I'll take em out in a bit and give it a try again but, this time I'll just wait for the yotes to show up. Think I'll let the dogs get on a rabbitt and after a while use a rabbitt distress. That ought to bring em in. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Happy huntin

OK guys lemme clear up a little confusion...

My bro' starts this thread and then comes over to my place, gets on here and posts... as me?!?!

So the post up above is him, not me, but I 'm me now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My brother goes off on a tear so fast sometimes I can't even keep up! LOL

These are the two things my bro' cares the most about in his whole life... He's pretty lucky!
