i want to do some trapping again but most of the place i can set are state game lands and i see a lot of guys with dogs for small game. i don't want to catch anybodys dogs. i have never used coon cuffs and was wondering how well they work and get some ideas for sets. if anyone has any for sale let me know. thanks

I tried the Duffers dog-proof traps, they just so happen to be everything proof. I don't know how the others are set off, but the Duffers requires the coon to reach in and grab a small lever and pull it pretty dang hard. I looped a string around it to set it off and I was surprised how hard I had to pull.

I kept it set for weeks with fresh bait, and all I did was feed the locals through the early winter. It was never set off in over a month, lousy POS.

I recently read in Fur-Fish-Game about a guy that tried one of the other dogless coon taps and had better luck, I'm not sure I want to spent the money on it again. I'm thinking about just getting a pipe or bucket and mounting a connibear (sp?) in it so that a dog can't get to the trap. Cheaper anyway, and it would have to work better IMHO

Have you guys thought about trying the grizz getrz taps? They are dog proof coon traps. Easy to set, and the trigger assembly works great. They are all I use for coon trapping. Once a coon gets caught, their caught! I don't have to bury the trap, just put the bait under the trigger, push the trap into the dirt and be gone onto the next set. Take a look and see what you think.

bucket sets work great for coons...i use 160 conibears and 4"x4" square holes in the bucket lids....and i've caught several large coon and a few grinners.

they are dog proof and if you use a sweet smelling lure, cat proof.

good luck

I have to agree that most of the dog proof traps are not very effective. This season I did catch a 29 1/2 lb. coon in a coon cuff (a first for me). I set 2 of these traps in a canal where the coons were digging out crawfish. I burried the trap but left the collar around the hole exposed and poured some fish oil into the trap. The reason I left the collar exposed is I had painted it white to look like all the PVC irrigation pipes around here. Got the big boar by 3 toes.

Smallblockfuely,

I've been using them since 1988 and it's well over a thousand raccoon. If I sat down and did the stubby pencil work, I'm sure it's getting close to two thousand by now. You have to have a system, and once you do, it's nothing but piecework, oh yeah, and a whole lot of fun!

Catch 'ya, Rick
