Does it matter which stripped lower?

I'm getting very close to contacting Dtech to build me one of his fine rifles.

The gun shop I'm dealing with had me a Double Star stripped lower on order but they are having problems getting them in and said he will have a Stag Arms in on Friday if I want it for the same price.

Is there any difference?

Well, by sending him a stripped lower you can save the excise tax, like $80.

I didn't know if one stripped lower was better than another.

Stag has a pretty good reputation.

You sometimes have to wade a little getting through some of the swamp, but AR15.com might be a good place to look for attitudes about what works and what doesn't in the black rifle world, if you're really interested.

Careful...black rifles are addictive and they can just start multiplying in your gun safe. And they are extremely easy to assemble yourself if you just get the "need" to do one...

My advice is to get a forged lower and don't worry about the brand, because most opinions are based on what the person giving the advice owns. Buy what you can get the best deal on. Bushy, DPMS, Oly, RRA , Stag they are all good lowers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Stag (CMT) makes all the lowers for Bushy and I think RRA too. You just pay $80 instead of $130. The way I look at it, I almost get 2 Stags instead of 1 Bushy and I do.

That sounds crazy, how do the higher priced companies sell lowers?

Just by name?

I mean heck, if they are the same why the difference in price?

scsims....you are likely correct, "by name".

Take my dept. for example, we can only use Colt and Bushmaster AR's for patrol duty. The brass only wanted one brand at first and that was to be Colt PERIOD.
But then, we had some trouble getting enough AR's so the big man was convinced Bushmaster was also a very good brand so he authorized the Bushys. The firearms geeks at work think they know everything so they will not even attempt to get any other brand approved for us.

I build most of my AR's on MEGA Machine uppers and lowers, they work just fine and the price is usually quite good. I just put together a pistol lower the other day, but I'm not sure what caliber it will be. From now on I think all my lowers will be logged in as a pistol. That way I can go from rifle to pistol anytime on the same lower.

Buy the least expensive forged lower you can find. If you don't like the logo buy the next least expensive etc...

There isn't a lot of voodoo or science to ARs. D-tech has been putting them together for a long time and it's doubtfull he will encounter any issues he isn't able to resolve. I've had good luck with Mega, Oly, Stag, RRA, DPMS, Bushmaster and I'm sure a few others. Don't over think it.

Over the years I have worked with just about all of them. You will find the finish on some to be consistently better than others. The only problem is if something isn't machined correctly, it doesn't matter how nice the finish is.

Each and every company out there has had "bad" receivers come through my shop. For a while one of the "top" name AR companies had so many problems that I refused to use their lower in a build. After a few years went by, I tried a few of that same company's receivers again. They were great! They had been bombarded with complaints and had corrected their problems.

There is one, perhaps two companies out there supplying all of the forgings for lower receivers. So what you have is, all the companies are starting out with the same raw product. The only difference is in the machining and coating. You can get a "bad apple" from any of the companies out there, and I don't know of any of the companies currently producing lower receivers that are having any "problems" at this time.

I finnished my first AR a few months ago, and I used a stripped Stag lower. First rate stuff, the color and finnish match up perfectly with my friends Rock Rivers and Bushmasters. As mentioned in an earlier post CMT makes the lower recievers for both Rock River and Stag so that should be too much of a surprise. The quality of the Stag lower impressed me so much that when it came time to put a M4 upper on it, I went with Stag as well.
