dog or coyote barks

Several times while calling in different areas, I hear barking. it's not consistent, just a few barks here and there. It may be up on the ridge, or a few hundred yards away in one case. Sometimes it will come from seperate directions, as if they were answering each other.

Is there a good way to tell if these are coyotes or dogs? I wouldn't suspect a dog in most of these cases, because I'm not calling close to a populated area, but I guess with today's people it wouldn't surprise me to find Rover running through the mountain fending for himself.

When I hear these barks, I often think to myself, the coyotes are laughing at me - I'm just waiting to get the last laugh.

thanks,
Mike

IF there's a question, it's a dog. Distress sounds drive dogs nuts. We hear them all the time when near farm-lands. Coyotes barks are high-pitch yapping, like a small dog. They're notthe "ruff" You hear, or would expect, from a dog that size. Coyotes will however, bark or howl back at you, and if it is a coyote, and you're good, you can (theoretically) challenge, or coax them in with a howler... I've never had any success doing this though

In my experience dogs like to defend the home turf. They will bark from nearby the home where they belong. If you are hearing barks from remote ridges well away from housing your probably hearing coyote's. I've been hearing this sound a lot myself this winter in one specific area. The alarm is a number of short barks with an occasional short howl thrown in. The coyote bark is sort of like ,aar, aar.Without the howl you can't be sure it's a coyote sometimes.Jimmie

One thing is for sure, actually two. Coyotes can and do bark, and as each one is an individual thier bark is going to be anywhere from real high to real deep. If they are answering the series of distress sounds with several barks that are followed by a short howl that changes in pitch from low to a high and is chopped off, I would have to bet that it is a challenge howl/bark. When they are doing this they have a high probability to being called and shot. I had been hearing this for some time and fiannally bought a JS challenge howl tape and it sounded just like what I had been hearing. I just started answering back like they do and they respond well. They are very vocal at times and sometimes it takes a lot of finnesse to get them to bark and howl. If it is just several barks with only an occassional howl I would have to agree with Jimmie. You have been busted. Been there , done that, got the T- Shirt lol.

Every domestic dog that I have had answer my calls will be fired up and bark quite a bit . Not just once or twice but for sevaral minutes.........James L.

Thanks for the info guys. Now I have no doubt, I've been hearing coyotes - most of the time busting me. I can remember hearing both the alarm and the challenge, based on Jimmie and James' decscriptions. Now I guess I know what to do next time.

I am getting closer. Yesterday I was calling and after finishing my stand, I walked back up the path and crested the ridge and there was a fresh pile of droppings - not more than 300 yards from where I made my stand. I was scented, either from the wind, or from when I walked in.
