dog versus cougar

I was asked a question. Could a Bullmastiff kill a cougar in a fight? The dog is 145# and the cat was about the same size in body. I think it could go either way. Anyone have an opinion?

I wouldn't want to have to count how many stitches that dog would have.A wild mountain lion is used to killing fullsize deer and occasionally elk from what I hear.I think the cats reflexes would be too much for the dog, that's just my opinion though.take care, daveyboy

If a cougar could be enticed to fight to the death I think it would kill the Bullmastiff. With the sharp claws and teeth plus the incredible quickness and strength I have to give the edge to the cat. Cougars regularly kill elk five or six times their own weight and do so alone. The thing is its not the nature of a cougar to fight a canine. A pack of yapping poodles could tree a cougar under the right conditions. I believe the cougar COULD be the most dangerous animal in North America if it wanted to be.

Its kind of like if cougars ever took to eating people on a regular basis like leopards, tigers and lions have in the past in India and Africa. Humans on this continent would be in deep trouble when out roaming the wilderness.

A single dog would have trouble getting behind the cat to clamp the jaws around to break the cats neck. If the dog tries strangle the cat by the throat you will have all the claws would be in action.

The cougar is a lot like a leopard in that unless you are in a park it is rare to find Mr Spots out in the open.If the cougar took the regular habitat of eating people the cultural carring capacity for most states would be 0 and would only be in the remotest parts of the country.

Yeah I am going to go with the rest of the guys too. If the cougar only had teeth, the dog might be able to eventually kill him. But with great big feet and claws the dogs has no chance against both feet and teeth. See ya, MOyotehunter

A number of years ago a top class fighting dog that had killed four out of five of his opponents and a known hard biter was jumped by a couger, while he did manage to run the couger off, he was laid up for a long time! no I don't beleave one on one a dog can kill a couger.

I saw a special on The Discovery Channel on Alfa Wolf vs. Cougar, and which one would win the battle to death. The end result (one on one)was the cougar would kill the Alfa wolf, but the wolf almost is never alone, always travels in packs so if the cougar ran into this mess he would definately be the looser.

The Bullmastiff is a tough dog, able to withstand incredible punishment, and, as you can see, I am a great fan of the breed, but one on one, if the cougar decided to stay and fight, the cougar would probably win 97 out of 100 times, just because a cat has 5 pointy ends, and a dog only has one. I believe a Bullmasitff could inflict major damage on a cougar, but in the end, the decision would go towards the big cat. Another thing to point out, is the Bullmastiff wasn't bred to be a fighting dog, it was bred to be a guard dog, and protect his/her master's property and family (originally to protect night watchmen) and they do it better than any other breed of dog. They can sweep a man off his feet and keep him pinned down without using their muzzle. They are very quick, and very powerful. And as was pointed out, a cougar will usually not stand and fight, because they have a high level of self preservation, where Bullmastiffs are notorious for fighting to the death to protect their family. As such, I really don't believe a cougar would attack with a large dog such as the Bullmastiff around. And I do know this, I have no fear of any animal - man or beast, when I have my Bullmastiff with me or when she is with my children. Their presence commands and demands respect, or fear, your choice.

Just to add to what Bullmastif said the dog bred the Bullmastif was breed to seize and hold poachers until the game warden appeared. These dogs were made to do this without inflicting excessive damage on the poacher (he still needed to go to trial). The dog was to give his life inorder to protect the game warden.
Now for a breed of dog that IS capable of catching and killing a cougar search out the Fila Brassilero, an argentinian leapard hunting dog. WARNING these dogs are excessively protective. They are also used for flushing cocaine production facilities of ALL people. This dog breed has an unusual gate very similar to a horse and it can maintain this fast pace for an incredibly long time. This breed is also for hunting boar in it's native land. Where only one or two of these dogs are used for hunting with a knife.
Here's a really good site with some real stories on Filas

Bullmastif, just saw your post. I know some folks that got a mastif pup about 6 or seven years ago. Wondering if maybe you had something to do with that ruination? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif They lived south west of Eugene and she was breeding horses by the truckload. Her name is Joni. Had Aussies too.

There are probally exceptional dogs that can take average cougars. But an exceptional cougar is beyond any dog IMHO. Saw a pic on AR of a Dogo that had one by the neck and supposedly killed it. What stuck out was just how much bigger that dogs head was than the cougers. Definately an exceptional dog against an average couger.

A cougar has five weapons where as the dog just has one.

Cats are quicker than lightining. Their tools are razor sharp.

I would hate to be "the dog".
