My DPMS Sweet Sixteen Bull Barrel is stamped .223 cal. on the barrel, is it Ok to shoot 5.56 ammo out of it? So far all I have shot out of it is strictly .223 ammo.
Thanks

Not exactly the same LBL...They are very similar, but the military 5.56 is loaded to higher pressures than standard factory .223 loads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

cm250,
I shoot both without consequence in my .223 rifle, but it depends on how your rifle will chamber them.

The .223 Wylde chamber is a medium between the two calibers & will function well with both, reportedly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have two DPMS's and they are marked 5.56. That being said 5.56 chambers throat and leade are longer than the .223 chamber due to some heavier bullets available in military rounds. The .223 chamber has a shorter throat and 5.56 rounds with heavier bullets fired in .223 chambers can cause pressure spikes. I have also heard that DPMS even though marked .223 are 5.56 chambers, I don't know this for sure. Best to call DPMS and ask. Since mine are marked 5.56 I have shot both .223 and 5.56 in them with good results.

The DPMS Sweet Sixteen is a 5.56 chambered upper. They stamp it like that for people that don't know what 5.56 is, also most retail stores label ammo .223 (not 5.56).

The Wylde chamber is not between the two. The Wylde chamber has a longer throat than either the 223 or the 5.56.

I'm glad someone cleared that up for me, Jack. Thanks.

I had read that the wylde would shoot both 5.56 & .223. Is there actually a .223 Wylde cartridge as well?

The Wylde will shoot both but actually all 3 are pretty much interchangeable. Any ammo that will fit in a magazine will be fine in any of them. After all, 100s of millions of rounds are shot interchangeably every year. The Wylde is only needed for longer than magazine length rounds loaded for single shot use.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies and for clearing this up for me. I thought I could shoot both safely, but just wanted to check and make sure. Where better to ask for advise than the greatest forum on the web.
