Hey guys,
Im wanting to get me a ar for coyote, deer, and some ground hog hunting. Now my question for yall is how accurate do you think that this factory gun will be? Im looking for something that will be good out to about 600 yards. I will be handloading my ammo. Should i go with the heaver version with the 20" barrel? Im also opened to opinions about cal. I dont know the first thing about an ar guys. Thanks alot

Theres a guy on here (NM Kid) who loves his DPMS 243. I think accuracy wise they are pretty impressive. If it were me, Id go heavy barrel...

I personally love my DPMS 308 and accuracy has been great!

Although DPMS customer service has been.. ehhhh.... Im not ready to bash them quite yet..

IDK what kinda $ youre looking at spending but a guy here has this for sale.

What about a remington r25? Ik they are made by dpms. They have a 20" barrel and they are relativly light compared to the standard dpms lr. However they do not have a stage 2 trigger. How much more accurate do you think the 2" will make the remington? What do you think is more important, the 20" barrel or 2 stage trigger? I could always upgrade the trigger later. I realy like the dpms version more but the 2" on the barrel will make a difference.

IMO you wont be able to tell the difference in those 2". The velocity loss may be noticeable at 600 but im not for sure (someone who is into the data side of shooting will be along to clarify this)...

My DPMS trigger isnt great by any stretch of the imagination. When I get the $, ill replace it with a drop in single stage.

Seeing as you will be hand loading for it, id just get the DPMS if you like it more.... I dont think you'll have a problem working up an accurate round..

my $00.02

I originally had the LR243 with the heavier contour barrel. It is .75 from the gas block forward and I think .936 behind. I don't remember exactly what it was under the handguard. It was also 20". This rifle was a tank. This past summer I switched it to the LR243L barrel and a JP handguard. The new barrel is .75 over the length of the barrel and it is 18". I put a thread saver on it and took off the compensator. If you have ever sat next to someone with a compensator or flash hider in a set you will know why this is important. This also lightened it up a tad. The JP handguard on the large frame rifles is the hot setup. It has an offset barrel nut so they can get away with a smaller diameter handguard tube. It is the same diameter as the AR15 handguards. These two mods made a significant difference in the handling of the gun. Here in NM I rarely take a shot at a coyote over 250 yards. I also wanted a relatively compact setup for jumping fences and to ease carrying in the field. I love this rifle. It is dead accurate and it is light enough to carry in the field all day long. I have a pic posted in the pics thread.
