Dry fire Savage Model 10 for storage?

Should you dry fire your rifle to release the firing pin spring for long term storage after the season?
I also remember reading about holding the trigger while closing the bolt. What methods do you use?

Thanks

Some folks are concerned about dry firing. Just holding the trigger and turning down the bolt will release the firing pin spring on most bolt guns.

Some guns have to be dry fired to drop the firing pin. The Ruger 10-22 comes to mind along with most pump and auto shotguns.

All my guns go in the safe with the firing pin down. I've been putting them away for better than 45 years with no problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

The Ruger 10/22's or any rimfire for that matter should have a chamber plug inserted before you dry fire.

Some match grade rimfire barrels don't have a relief groove cut, when dry firing on these you can do serious damage to your firing pin.

Most center fires can handle dry firing without any adverse affects. Holding the trigger back and easing the bolt handle down will decock most. I would never store a firearm without decocking it.

Centerfire's I wouldn't really worry about it. But for all the rifles and shotguns we have we have snap caps, they really help on dryfire practice too. So don't worry, get the snap caps.

Never dry fire a rimfire or shotgun.
