Durable, do-it-yourself paint?

Ive seen the dura-coat kits, what else is out there for a solid do-it-yourself colored finish on rifles? Maybe something that can be puchased at home depot or an auto parts store? I was thinking of spray can auto engine paint or something.... suggestions?

Krylon Camo sold at your local wally world.Might not be as durable as what your looking for, but if you bang it up just paint it again. Mine maid it thru turkey season.Turkey didn't. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a handful of rifles that are just krylon'd, but it is not the same as duracoat...and I have quite a few that are duracoated'd also.....duracoat is easy to work with and apply. Give them a call and see if you will be dissappointed.

If you use Krylon, you might try giving it a coat or two of satin polyurethane over top. I tried using Krylon 1311 matte sealer on my Kryloned shotgun, but it seemed to dissolve under the effects of solvents, lubricants and remained tacky for some reason. I cleaned that off and sprayed it with the first coat of satin polyurethane to try this waterfowling season.

Don't know how durable it will be, but it's likely better than just the Krylon. I know using the matte 1311 helped, despite it's deficiencies.

I have kryloned my dog remy gun with flat camo colors and it held up very well in the first year of use. I just used duracoat kit to paint the trigger guard & reciever on my 10/22 & you can't scratch it off with your fingernail after 2 days! For now on every thing gets painted w/duracoat.

Alrighty,
What is the best thing to clean your gun with when getting ready to dura coat it?I know dura coat has something but i'm looking for something different. Also the bolt and all other moving parts do you paint them and shave off where it will touch or do you paint it in the gun?

Well i guess is what i'm asking is step by step of what needs to be done.

I have order the urban dura coat kit.I'm probably going to make my own patterns but wanted the tiger strips just in case it dosen't work out like I want it too.

Has anyone had any trouble with the heat off the barrel that has been dura coted?not the high heat but the normal?

I have read about a lot of guys painting their guns and coming up with spectacular results, but what about the scent of the paint? How long does it take to disapate. I would think that for the first month or two there would be quite a scent plume from the paint when you carried it out in the field

If they are smelling your gun, that means they smell you as well. Game over /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

To be really durable duracoat needs to be left alone for several days. The firearm should be detail stripped as well each piece being painted individually. since the cammo paterns use several colors that is pretty easy. Start with the base color do everything you want paint on. then stencil and use next color and so on. But let parts set a day or so in between. Acitone is what you use for cleaning. You want to make sure the parts are totally free of dirt and grease, even oils from your fingers. Then reassemble oiling carefully

You sure can! A free afternoon and a couple of cans of Krylon camo paint followed with Brownells Alumi-Hyde clear epoxy and you can have this!!

I took a lot of time thinking before I got the guts up to spray it. I painted it in a coulpe of hours one afternoon and then waited a couple of days and topcoated it with clear epoxy.. After doing this one I won't hesitate to do another one.... It has held up very well!!

I use the Krylon paints from Walmart. Just recently finished my Handi 243. Should know how it holds up after this years whitetail season.
