Ear plugs for shooting in the field?

Oh man I got the Tinnitus bug, But have had it for so long I normally do not notice it most of the time until I am reminded about it. My favorite words are "say again please", or "HUH".
Did not get much of it from shooting cause I do use Muff's or plugs, Got most of it on the job when I was young.

As Jack said use hearing protection or loose your hearing.

If you have a muzzle break on your rifle you need hearing protection with any shot fired from said rifle, big bore or small bore, no matter whether in wide open spaces or not.

Ya know....my son says my hearing is bad and I tell him he is full of crap. Now that this thread has been around, I think I may have some hearing problems. I hardly ever understand anybody the first time and just the other day, I had my buddy repete himself three times before I understood what he said....but hes from Georgia and hard to understand anyhow......I am going to look into hearing protection for the field, I would like to keep what hearing I have.
 
I am thinking that one shot can do damage.Some time back my buddy and I were riding down an old dirt road in the country and there was a groundhog on my side about 30 yd or so.He handed me his .44 mag redhawk and said shoot him.I eased open the door and stepped out,knowing better than to shoot in the truck but did not notice we were under a great big sycamore tree with low limbs in summer,like a roof.Ears have rung ever since.

I usually leave my left plug in and the right dangling so I can hear, then slip it in before the shot.

I've got some tinnitus, not looking to add to it.

This is what I do... now anyway.
Wish I would have done it about two years ago as my left ear has tinnitus. Will save what I have now and hopefully it won't get worse.

I got something similar to THESE EAR MUFFS and they work for me. I might get some pricier ones someday, but starving college student's like me can't afford the luxuries. But, they do make it easier to hear the smaller noises.

Before I was keeping standard muffs right above my ears and even on my ears if all the brush was a good ways away.

Just because you don't notice the noise or recoil doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I know from experience I can get a large thorny branch of mesquite or chunck of cactus in my arm or leg, and adrenaline will completely mask the pain. When I notice after I calm down it hurts pretty good to remove them. I bet I could stab most of us in the leg during the adrenaline dump of shooting at an animal, and I doubt many would notice unless they saw me or it was a really big knife!!! I am not looking for volunteers to demonstrate though so don't offer.

I want to be able to hear well even when the rest of my body is failing me, and there really isn't a reason I shouldn't be able to except laziness or foolishness.

Buy the squishy orange/green foam plugs sold at Wal Mart; 6 pairs for $3-4.00

Push them All THE WAY in your ears (NO, they won't get stuck! They sneak out when you first put them in so push them back in all the way and then they stay put. Roll em' to a point on initial insertion.).

I hate to see people use these when they are just barely inserted, they work best when pushed all the way in and they then conform to the ear canal as they expand. And, one pair lasts forever and they can be washed an indefinite number of times

You need to get with the program re read the research on hearing loss; don't use firearms without them!!!!
 
For the price of foamies, I'm more than happy to chuck them instead of clean them when they get nasty

Some day I'll get a nice set of electronic plugs, I don't care for muffs. But I did buy a set of caldwell electric muffs and they seem to work well on both amp and dampening. I want a 2nd set for when I'm with new hunters and talking them through a shot and don't want to be right on top of them.

Damage is ALWAYS done regardless of whether or not you notice it. If all it took to be superhuman was to look at a deer I'd glue a picture of one to my eyeball.

I've been in a lot of fights, and you don't notice 1/2 of what's happening. But once the guy is in cuffs and the addrenaline wears off you feel like you were run over by a truck.
 
i have a walker game ear i use when i am hunting with my encore pistol
She BARKS loud lol
i wear the game ear in my left ear and i Rest my right ear on my shoulder to block the sound when i shoot
I can aim pretty good using this method
also i only have 0% hearing in my right ear Due to a small stick hitting my ear drum and scarring 15 years ago.
wal mart sells some pretty cheap electronic ear buds
they are supposed to block loud sound and amplify like the walkers do
i may get a set and try them out this year
 
I agree, The Short barrels are pretty loud. I never shoot the 14" Contender, or the Mini14 without plugs.. even then it can get to be more than I care for. Protect them Ears!
 
After we put muzzle brakes on our 7MM REM MAGS? ear protection was MANDATORY!! Forget putting the plugs in and fire the rifle and its like getting slapped along both sides of your head with the flat sides of two frying pans.

In my early twenties I lost hearing in my left ear between 2,000 and 5,000 cycles because of NOT using ear protection. I'm left handed. So sayeth the ear specialists anyway.

Tinnitus anybody? What??
