East Texas hunt (Black coyote)

I was over in deep east Texas on Tuesday night due to the death of a good friend and fellow employee's 20yr old son who was run over by a drunk driver while riding motorcyles with his dad. While at the visitation I was catching up with mutual friends and customers and as happens this time of year we all got to talking hunting and such. Then a large group of us went to dinner together and during discussions there I told them I was taking my wife back to Waco then returning the next day for the funeral. Well after hearing me say I had been hunting coyotes BT a local cattle rancher told me to bring my stuff and come out to the farm the next day.So I did. I met Tim Brittain who works for BT and I knew was also an avid hunter at the farm along with another friend Sidney and we proceeded to the woods.
Our first setup was along a tree lined creek that was bordered on both sides by fields. I got on one side of the creek and they on the other. I started with DSG cottontail and at about 7 minutes in I hit pup distress and instantly heard a shot. Turns out a coyote was trotting up the tree line trying to get the wind on us but Tim fired 1 shot from the Tac 20 and put him down instantly at about 100yds.
Well we moved to another small field surrounded by tall pines and it was a instant replay of the last setup 7 minutes in and almost at the exact moment I hit pup distress Sidney shot and as I looked hard to my right I saw the coyote flop to the ground. The Tac 20 did it again this time about 80yds. I had only brought two guns so they were taking turns.More story and pictures to follow.

By now it was almost dark we setup one more time but after a few minutes we quit as it was too dark to see.

Well BT twisted my arm and made me stay the night so we could hunt a little the next morning. This time it was just Tim and I and we got to a different piece of property as it was getting good shooting light. He told me the lay of the land and we decided to walk a few hundred yards across the pasture to where it dropped off down to a creek bottom and there was a large oak that we could setup by. As we were easing up to look in the bottom Tim said "oh no there are someones dogs down there". I looked and could not believe it not one black coyote but two of them out in the cows.Well I could have just shot one of them right then but when I realized they still had not seen us we dropped out of sight and moved to our left over to the treeline and Tim setup there. The setup was not very good but we were pinned down. I thought it would be better for one of us to ease back up to higher ground just in case they came straight in so I did but once I crawled out there I realized it was a mistake but I setup anyway.I could not see anything because the rise of the ground in front of me so anything I would see would be very close or way out there. Well I hit DSG and the first coyote I see is running up the tree line straight at Tim but he stops and sits down at 200yds or so.Tim fires and the coyote ducks in the woods and I am thinking he missed. No, what made the coyote stop was a black coyote popped out 30yds from Tim and I guess the coyote I was looking at saw the black one. Tim shot and knocked down the black one so I hit pup distress and then way down below me here came the other black coyote with a white tipped tail.I could only see its head at that point so I rolled to my knees and tryed to steady myself on the sticks but I was wobbling and from this postion the sticks were too short. Since the coyote was headed toward Tim as bad as I wanted a black coyote I let it go on and wouldn't you know it never slowed and ran right in front of him into the wood and he never got a shot off.DSG was still playing when another coyote ran out between us and as Tim tryed to move to shoot it it saw him and made in back in the woods before he could get on it.Still not knowing Tim had shot the black coyote I was DISGUSTED to say the least. As we got together and he told me he knocked down the black coyote but it ran off then I was really DISGUSTED. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif We walked down to where he said the coyote was standing and there was lots of blood going into the woods. I crawled over the fence and as I started into the woods we heard what sounded like the coyote struggling. I followed the blood for a short distance then lost the trail and started circling looking for the coyote. I was beginning to think I had lost the trail then I found more blood headed toward a creek and as I approached the creek the coyote struggled up the opposite side and made it into some brush. I could see his head but did not want to shoot him in the head as I was thinking Tim would want to mount him so I manuvered to the left and finally got a shot into the neck. Turns out Tim broke both front legs but the shot was too low to kill quickly. Fortunately we got a black coyote but unfortunely the taxidermist has his work cut out for him. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

David, you are going to have to quit going off without me, especially when black coyotes are involved!

Very nice coyote, and I am looking forward to our next trip.

I heard about the young man being killed on the motor cycle. I saw on the news this morning where they arrested the woman for intoxicated manslaughter. As you know,my wife works with his dad.

Those with a white tip on their tail are now called "2 Pointers"...

I think most of the blacks are carrying some white on them, which is pretty neat in itself... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Yellowhammer it was kind of funny and ironic as we were driving to the spot where we shot the Black coyote Tim said that he needed to get a biologist out to the farm to help them with their deer program and I was telling him I wish I had known that because you would have been there with us.Five minutes later I was looking at two black coyotes and thinking to myself Sean is gonna be sick.

i have never seen a black yote
but
i will never forget my first black wolf
it was the first wolf i had seen in the wild
and it scared the bleep out of me
it was on the edge of a stand of timber, loping and stopped and stared at me for awhile
it probably weighed well over 60lbs
i still see that image when i hear them howl

No actually I called up one last february in Misisisippi but it was in a mature pine plantation and was running thru trees and I barked to try and stop it and its partner stopped but the black kept running and got away. I have also seen one a long time ago in Mississippi in a plowed field and a good friend killed a black one from the truck and thought it was a wolf so he took it to Parks and wildlife and they checked it and said it was just a black coyote. I did see a black wolf while bear hunting in Alberta, canada about 10yrs ago.
