Eddy County New Mexico

Guys,

Anyone out there hunt this area for coyotes ?? My boy and I are planning a trip and I’ve been studying maps and it looks like pretty good amount of blm land. Don’t want any hotspots or anything, just general info. If anyone knows of a good evening spot that would be great. Planning on camping in the rv in the desert if possible.

Thanks

Well, I got some advice that Taos County probably wasn’t the best area to go in January. Sounds like it can be cold with a lot of snow. Eddy County is apparently down by Carlsbad with a bunch of BLM land. Might be a better choice with an even shorter drive. Anyone ever hunt it?

I hunt there all the time. I live next door in Lea County.

Are y’all local New Mexico or are you driving in?

E-38/Louis Whitlock Rd. Also called WIPP road. Is a great place to look. I hunt different spots off that road. It’s not quite as high traffic as some oilfield areas and I’ve seen lots of dog tracks everywhere I turn off that road.

You could also try going South of Carlsbad and see if you can find some spots close to the river. If you don’t get any coyote action you can just fish!

There are dogs everywhere out here. Just look for tracks, scat, etc...

I’ve hunted coyotes a limited amount in Eddy County but I’m sure NMGuy knows the area better than me. Anywhere in the county will have coyotes. Put a blind fold on and randomly select a spot on the map and there will be coyotes there. Some of the desert country doesn’t look like it will hold coyotes but they are there. When I’m looking at new areas I look for the obvious signs like coyote tracks and scat but also pay attention to cows, jackrabbits and deer. If you see a lot of jackrabbits, cows or deer then I know the area likely holds a higher density of coyotes. In January I’ve seen coyotes at all elevations. I’ve seen them in the high country around Cloudcraft and Riudoso but I think the mid and lower elevations would hold higher numbers of coyotes. If the weather is bad one day or your looking for a change you could also check out Carlsbad Caverns. Coyotes are very difficult animals to hunt so don’t get discouraged if you dont get into them. Good luck.

I hunted down there a few years back. Was mostly scouting by myself and my dog. Tipped a few coyotes over. Isn't that Tony T's area?

I’ve had the best luck getting coyotes to come in when I come across pronghorn at a stand. If we’re setting up a call and we see antelope there, it’s usually almost always leading to a dog walking in to the call.

Of course coyotes will eat deer, calves, birds, rabbits, etc... but I think they’re partial to pronghorn around here. Or maybe they just like to hang out with the pronghorn. Who knows!
