recently moving from Idaho to the Piney Woods of
E texas---I have had decent luck on calling yotes & bobcats with hand calls in ID-----down here nothing I use seems to work. I am thinking very seriously on buying a electronic caller------I have never been interested in one before or felt I needed one so I haven't a clue as where to start or what sounds to order-------of course I am looking to spend the least as possible-------always keeping in mind "ya get what ya pay for" scenario-------I saw a caller in my local gun store "Cass creek Nomad MX-3"----under $100----------is this worth the $100???? Or just throwing money away that should be used on another model,,,brand??? Any advice I receive will be GREATLY appreciated--------

Thank you
DJ

One of the best inexpensive callers one can buy for the money is a Johnny Stewart Preymaster. You can find them on EBay most of the time in the $80 to $100 price range.

Welcome to Texas, and hope you rode out the hurricane fine. What a welcome, huh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Good hunting,

I just bought a Johnny Stewart Power Pro Convert-a-caller on Walmart.com for $80 plus tax and shipping.

I will use it with my CD player and mp3 player, it is a pretty slick unit, if you don't have to have a remote. It does have a 30 ft cord on the soeaker though, and I am going to get a longer cord for it.

Might be worth taking a look at, seemed like a good deal, too.

If you hunt alone, I don't think an ecaller will help unless you get one with a remote. If you're gonna keep the sound close to you anyway, you might as well stick with your hand calls.

83536,

You mentioned you had some hand-call success in ID, I'm thinking if you're striking out with hand-calls now, an e-caller by itself isn't likely to help. Now, if you were missing called critters, or if you were getting busted through hand motions, then yes, an e-caller can help there.

I'm curious, what's different about where you are now in TX? Is it flatter, swampier, or brushier where you're setting up? Is there something specific that's totally unfamiliar to you, something about ID that worked but doesn't quite apply to TX? (Just a for instance: laying out or sitting on the ground might work well in the mountains where you set up on a saddle between canyons, on a patch of high ground-- it may be that there is no high ground in your part of TX, are your sight lines limited? In which case, maybe a tree stand is called for.) Selecting a stand in a spot that both has predators and pathways where they can be spotted as they come in is often my biggest challenge to a new calling area, a far bigger quandary than whether I'm using the right sound or means of delivering it.

Tonlocus, Cougarbait,

As far as hand-callers having more apparent success, I'd offer it's either one of three things. First, more time afield, more experience. Many die hard hand-callers started out with e-callers but later on switched as they gained experience and confidence, particularly after they realized it was no longer necessary to lug around additional apparatus that weighs several pounds, is bulky, and requires batteries. Simplifying things with an elegant solution involving using only their lungs and a 1 ounce widget to get the same job done, with the added sense of self-reliance, was much more funner.

Second reason hand calls may be superior is not so obvious. An average e-caller with poor frequency response will not hit the high notes that are a real component of open reed handcalls and lipsqueaks, portions of which are out of the realm of adult human ears, but surely not foxes, bobcats, and coyotes. (This comment applies even to some relatively recent products. Don't know if this applies to the Cass Creek. Several manufacturers are coming around on this issue however.)

Third is that many recordings lack a quality that might be called "urgency" or "insistence". It's like the dang rabbit has been through all this before and is just chronically complaining on cue, emitting a boring wah-wah-wah-wah-Ah (translation: "Let go of my ears. You know how I find it uncomfortable to be picked up by my ears. How many times do I have to tell you, I resent it when you pick me up by my ears?"). With a handcall, OTOH, it's easier to spice it up and sound like the moral outrage of imminent rabbit death.

I actually have more success with my Loudmouth over my hand calls. But I think it has more to do with being able to place the caller in an area that can be better covered by me as the shooter. Using hand calls, I have to leave at least 180 degrees of approach uncovered. Not so with an ecaller set out at about 40 yards on a cross wind blowing into an opening. I get to cover alot more approach routes that way.

Just my opinion though. It may be that I just suck at blowin my calls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Have I got a deal for you. I've got a loudmouth that just needs a decent offer and it's yours.

Let me know.

And, I'll sell it way below what it's worth.

Hey Buker.....your not allowed to sell the Bushwhacker prototype so don't even think about it!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If he tries to panhandle that thing off to any of you guys...don't do it...it does not work. Come to think of it...I'll bet you could find one of those collectors to buy it. It is Priceless.

GS,

I've kept my mouth shut until now. But, now that you mention it, I've got four of them. I actually like the last couple for the volume and crow sounds. I won't part with them. Those sounds are crystal clear and the volume is fantastic. The remote doesn't need to work over 10 feet so I'm in business!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Those will be museum pieces sought after by collectors from everywhere. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I did not realize you got 4. I have about 10. They just take up space in my R&D room. HS may want to get them back before it is all said and done.

You were a worthy and trusted field tester for us and I thank you for that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
