Elk calls for callng coyotes

I have discovered over the last few days that a Primos ivory plate diaphragm cow call makes a fair to middlin' howler. And the coyotes will answer it too. Left my mother in law's house about 9:30 tonight, the coyotes were howling across the river, and I did a few barks and a howl on the cow call, and they howled back. I guess I'll have to try this some time when I'm hunting.

You're right Moon. I used to use a Sceery cow call in place of the original AP-6. The elk call was a much better and more reliable call than the predator call for calling coyotes and such.

Curt is it the sceery elk call that looks like the AP-6. The Knight&Hale rep showed me how he used an open reed elk call that worked great for a howler and it was loud too!

Hello Moonshine,

Your are absolutelt right. I use a Carltons fighting cow elk call. The call is green in color about 3 inches long and has an open reed. Makes for a descent howler, but an awesome coasre jack rabbitt. I use it more and more, so far 6 yotes have been collected from it this yr.

moonshine, all I ever use a dia. calls, cheap and you can carry bunch of them, I carry three in my pocket all the time. and the plastic case is perfect for the pocket
 
I use an Sceery ACE something open reed as an AP-7. Same call different shaped barrel on the outside. It's the same on the inside.
I also have a Primos open reed cow call that I use. It's exactly like their coyote call.

Like Songdogger I to have used Sceery's Cow Elk (ACE)call and have had great luck with it.It is an Open reed call.Great sounds.GOOD HUNTING
 
Hey Fellas,

I was thinking about getting one of those Sceery Elk calls and you might have just seeled the deal for me.

But, the other one I was looking at was a converted Elk cow call made my ABE & SON calls. They now market it as a coyote call. Do any of you have experience or any input on this call

I would only use it for the yote vocals. I called them here a while back and like any good customer service guy he played me a few tunes over the phone. He even explaned how it works. Over the phone it sounded very much like the real deal. I think it was ole Abe himself if I'm not mistaken.

Wow, I guess I stumbled onto a well kept secret. Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll start carrying my elk call when I hunt too. I love my Phantom Predator caller, but I do think the coyote howl is kind of less than perfect. I think I can do better doing the howling myself.
