Eureka, South Dakota??

Since I just joined the Predator Master Board early in December, I am seeking some information on a place called Eureka, SD. My In-laws own 480 acres in this area. They lives in No. Calif. and I live in Oregon, but am curious whether or not this area is good coyote country.

I would love to visit this area some time, as no doubt my wife and I will be the "proud" owners of this land at some point in the future.

Any info on critters would be helpful. (This land has CRP, wood plots, a creek, and is boardered on all sides by a county road, I'm told.) It has been in the family for almost 100 years!

I am not exactly sure where Eureka, SD is at, but I lived in Rapid City SD for a number of years and my family has a farm in central SD (Alpina). Sounds like your property has all of the makings of an excellent hunting spot. Predator calling across SD is exceptional. I haven't seen Wiley E on the site for a long time, but he could probably tell you all about it, also. He is a gov't trapper from SD. Happy hunting!
 
Eureka is North Central, (east river) approx 12 miles from North dakota, and east of Pollock. I have never hunted this area, but it is remote enough, that it probably is OK, like the rest of SD. The ground appears to be somewhat flat, and quite a few mile by mile sections and alot of wetland, swamps to the east, and a little rougher ground heading west to the river, based on my Topo map, page 18. Rustydog...You hit the proverbial predator hunting jackpot! Eureka and the surrounding area are in what I would call the best coyote hunting spot in the state. I have hunted between there and Aberdeen (east of Eureka) and there are plenty of yotes as well as prime habitat to call in. Also have the additional bonuses of plenty of pheasant as well as close proximation to the Missouri River (Mobridge is about 1 hour west of there) and its great walleye and pike fishing, although the recent drought years have really taken the river level down and hurt its baitfish population (rainbow smelt). Most of the land up in that part of the state gets used for livestock grazing (cow/calf operations) but there is some tillable areas for crops which are mainly irrigated. 480 acres huh...you and your wife are lucky people! -GB
 
Thanks for all of your input on Eureka, SD Wow, I had no idea this was such a game producing area.

The funny part of the story is that no one in our family has been back there for years, so we really do not know what is actually being done with the land! For all we know, someone could be leasing hunting rights or some such thing!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I heard that there was a tennent farmer working the property, but that was a few years ago. I guess this Fall, after the weather cools down, we will have to make a trip up there and check it out! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
