Everyone Misses

I have praised the accuracy of the Flir PTS536 scope. It has some negatives, but overall it has been a very precise thermal scope. After harvesting 24 coyotes in a row, I had this encounter earlier this year. I rushed the shot a little but to this day have no idea what happened to this bullet. I've slowed it down frame by frame and the dot was right where it was supposed to be when it broke. It is hard to see the reticle after the conversion to a YouTube video. Oh well, I cleaned it up with the running shot. It just shows, if you hunt enough, everyone misses!

Kind of the same thing happened to me the other night. Stopped at a field next to one of mine and although I was going to be upwind decided to give it a go. Worked up field with no cover except the fence line which had just take out so not much cover. Had two manufacturing plants about 1/2 mile away on down wind also with extremely bright lights that I felt about anything could see me walking. Any way pulled up scanner as walking and there was one walking across a couple hundred yards away and turning away as I figured he say me. I dropped down and shed my pack and seat and pulled up the scanner and there he was heading right at me! Not by accident but could see he had interest. Put down scanner and brought up rifle and he kept coming. Stopping occasionally so I decided to lip squeak when he did and he would start right back up directly at me. I was sitting in the dirt with leg bent to steady the rifle but could not get it steadied very good. He kept coming to probably 75 to 100 yards away and pretty much filled the 12.8x pip screen. Was getting worried about him smelling me so tried to time my shot when the cross hairs centered. Wished I would have waited to see if he turned sideways as he was dead on and a narrow target for the moving crosshairs. Anyway, I missed. Shot tripped as the reticle moved just beside him (when I slowed the recording down) and follow ups missed as it was tough turning with him in that position. Should learn how to post on YouTube but had a few choice words that got recorded as I was pissed. Don't miss to many runners but was mad I missed the dead on shot. Made a running away shot the night before on one I hit at about 220 running diagonally up a hill. Hit him with another to finish him. If you ever seen the movie "Money Ball" Brad Pitt says "I hate losing, I hate losing more than I like winning". That's how I feel about missing. Good thing you still got him. Takes some of the sting out of the miss.

Missing is part of it sometimes, though we never seem to adjust to the idea of it. My confidence seems to be shaken when I miss but I much prefer a miss to a wounding.
