Factory or Custom AR-15

Hello,

I'm thinking about getting an AR-15 "Varmint". Taking all things into consideration: cost, quality, time, compatibility, skill level, flexibility and accuracy.

Is it better to build one yourself from scratch, or just buy a factory built one complete?

What can one expect from an out of the box gun?

What would be the best barrel length?

I don't reload at this time and would be quite satisfied with "Reasonable Grouping".

Thanks

check out oly arms they have great shooting ar's and you can get most anything you want on one. sum barrels shoot 1/4 inch groups , not that i am good enough to shoot that type group, but it does happen.

Just asked that same question myself, about 3 weeks ago now have a 25wssm complete by Dtech with a 223rem upper being sent to me that Mike completely built and tested. Can't beat the price plus the gun like anyother thing is as good as the guy you buy it from.. Send me a PM if you have any question's

I would probably buy the complete upper, then the complete lower and pust the 2 pins and save a couple hundred off the top. D-Techs' uppers are priced right at off the shelf uppers and have the best known bbls. He does a few extras that would cost dearly elsewhere. I'm working on getting one now.
When you get acustomed to shooting it.And you get better, your loading will find a platau. If your bbl isn't capable of proceeding, you will find yourself rebarrelling or buying another upper. Start with the better bbls and you will probably not grow unhappy with it. A good trigger helps too.So does a nice scope. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
YOu will spend as much for a shelf AR as you would a D-Tech upper and complete lower. Point being. The SUM upper on an AR will shoot better.Period.
I think he will test it before mailing it to ya. And tell ya what he tested it with.

Hello,

I'd also buy the complete upper and complete lower, two pins and done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

But some AR triggers are ugly so you might go with a stripped lower and add trigger of your choice(and a few nickel and dime parts).

My first AR is an Olympic SUM and it almost out shoots my half-custom 22-250. Actually there identical out to 200 yards, after that the 250 riegns. If I decide on a knew AR(must fight EBR disease), I'd go with a Dtech upper and some sort of custom parts lower.

I have shot them all over the years and believe that a good barrel and someone who can put it together for you is the way to a great shooting AR. The upper is everything in my opinion as the lower only operates the system. Also, a great trigger is a must! JP or Jard single stage would be the way I would go.

It seems like 20 inches is the standard barrel length. As far as accuracy would it be better to go to a 22 or 24 inch barrel?

Do to the barrel configuration on an AR is it worth having it fluted for accuracy?

I've been reading all your posts and would like to thank all of you for the great advice.

A longer barrel will give you more velocity but will not help accuracy. On average the shorter barrel will be more accurate because the shorter barrel is stiffer.
