Factory round for bear protection.

I carry a .44 mag. for protection when in bear country(black bear not grizz) and am wondering what other folks are using for commercially loaded ammo for this purpose.I don't handload anymore.

I've found that black bear are not a "hard to kill" animal. I've killed 19 with a 44 and 41 magnum here in Idaho and mostly used a 255 Kieth style cast in the 44 and a 210 cast in the 41 mag. Any of the 240 grain jacketed solids would work well for black bear. The only bullet I didn't have really good luck with was the jacketed hollow points.

Thanks IDBob.With that number of kills I consider you an expert on killing black bear with a revolver and value your advice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I carry a Redhawk stoked with Rem. 240 grainers. Killed one with a Win. 210 grain Silvertip in my Ruger 44 carbine, one shot, bang flop.

I never kilt one before, but go to federalcartridge.com and look at the 300 grain hard casts. Suppose to be for complete penetration, should be good.
