Fallon Nv Hunt

Just wondering how anyone that attended this hunt did? I know that the 1st place had 9 dogs and there was a tie second with 6 dogs, but one team had more males than the other, so the team with more males took second and the other placed third.
As for my team, we need straighter shooting guns, or to call in slower coyotes. Yeah, slower coyotes would be perfect. We got one on saturday, missed double saturday also, got busted at a couple of stands. Then on sunday morning had another double blow into the stand, and as the first coyote passed by me, I moved to shoot and the second dog hit the bush I was sitting in front of as he hit the brakes. Got off four rounds and didn't hit a thing.
Just curious who got what that went to this hunt.

My team tied for 5th place, I think. 9 took 1st and 6 took 2nd and 3rd. One guy I talked to said his team shot 5. Nobody that I talked to shot 4, but there were several teams that shot 3. I was a little suprised that 208 total hunters only harvested 68 coyotes. My brother and I had a blast. We really could have finished 2nd with a little more luck (or skill). Understand that we had never called Nev. before. Looking at the terrain and trying to decide if coyotes were there was fun and a challenge. Most of the places we called did in fact hold coyotes. We called 2 doubles and 1 single the 1st day but only managed to kill 1 of those. We also got busted on several stands the 1st day. 2nd day we only called till 1pm in order to make check-in. We called 4 singles and managed to kill 2 of those. All our coyotes were males 27 to 30lbs. My 1st calling contest was a throughly enjoyable experience and we didn't finish to bad. I'm ready for next year.

Reeper,
If you don't mind me asking, what area did you and you brother hunt? My son and I hunted up north around the Gerlach area and we got into some yotes up there, but as I said we needed to call in the slower coyotes. No to many coyotes that can outrun a .223 and a .17 Rem but those ones sure did. Maybe next time. I work with the guy that took 3rd.
I had a great time after the check in and dinner was pretty good also.
I think the warm weather has alot to do with the small number of coyotes being taken. By 9:00 am both days, we were already hunting in shirts.

Carl,
We started the 1st day at a place called Sulfer on the map. I think this was part of the Black Rock Desert. We worked E. from there and then N. up to hwy 140. 2nd day we started at Winnemmucca and worked W. and then S. Sorry I can't be more specific but we really didn't know where we were other than what the GPS said. I liked the challenge of finding coyotes in unfamiliar country but I'm not ready to trade in OR for NV yet. We really should have taken 6 of the 9 we called but sh.. happens sometimes. I intend to go again next year if possible because we had a blast. Next year I'm going to keep the shotgun in my hands until the situation dictates use of the rifle. That alone would have probably gotten us 2 more kills. We initially intended to work a little closer to the Gerlach area but just never got around to it. It was kind of like "that road looks good" and away we went. I would like to thank you NV guys for the hospitality and sharing a few of your coyotes.

Reeper,
By any chance were you driving a blue chevy pickup? I live in Fernley and driving home after the dinner we were behind a chevy from Oregon, that had some of that Nv mud all over it, and I was thinking maybe that was you. Got to Fernley and they pulled into the AM/PM.
I know what you mean about having the shotgun. For next year I'm going to get a pistol grip for my 870 and carry that in addition to my rifle. We also might have come away with a couple more yotes had we had the scatter gun. You know hindsight is 20/20. Coulda, shoulda, woulda!
You guys started just on the other side of the mountains from where we started on Saturday. I think you may have gone to the right out of Gerlach and we went to the left. We hunted up by a place called Lost Creek.
Anyway, glad you guys had a good time and I do hope to see and meet you at the next Valley Of The Dogs calling contest.

Hey carl, a buddy and me were huntin' yote's just outside of Gerlach last weekend. I am kind of uneasy about saying exactly where, because this is one of my buddy's hot-spots and don't want to step on his toes. One thing I can tell you though is that between the full moon and all the bird hunters with their dogs, the hunt'n stunk! the weather was just too nice for hoards of town-folk not to go in the hills. No sooner than we set on our second stand, we started hearing shotguns in the distance. But I still had a blast, that's why I hunt.
Good luck to 'ya

SongDog, I know what you mean about the weather, and also about disclosing any vital info. I think we heard the same gun shots, and saw the same people driving the roads up in that area. For the middle of the winter here in Nv. I think we saw just as many t-shirts this past weekend as we do on any day during the summer.
The dogs were out there, but as you said the warm temps and the full moon did absolutely nothing to help the situation, and now look at the weather. If not for the rain, it would probably be good calling. Such is life!
