Fast Accurate Shooting!

I just finished reading an interview of Bill Shehane written by Dave Scott.

For those not familiar with the name, Bill Shehane is a real guru of 1000 yard benchrest shooting. He is a stockmaker for the sport and a very big Nightforce scope dealer. He has held many State and National titles including National 1000 yard benchrest shooter of the year and smallest 1000 yard group of the year. In 1996 he broke the 1000 yard group record with a 3.150 group. I think we can assume he knows how to shoot 1000 yard benchrest.

He shoots FAST. When conditions are right he likes to get off 10 shots in 15 to 20 seconds. I quote; "Ten shots in 15 to 20 SECONDS will always beat 10 shots in a minute if the conditions are changing fast."

Now keep in mind this is with single shot bolt action rifles. It sure seems to prove, at least for benchrest, that a single shot is no impediment to fast shooting.

Jack,
Obviously, that's with a rail gun-(unlimited bench), right???

Thats pretty impressive to say the least. I can't imagine that kind of 5 or 10 shot group with any of my rifles at 500 yards!

It pays to be quick on the trigger when everything settles down. I have proven that to myself before. We are talking maybe 5 shots in 60 seconds though....

With a well behaved rifle, I can get 5 well aimed shots off in about 45 seconds, and shoot groups under a quarter inch on a good day. But that ain't nothing compared to some of the guys like Bill Shehane!

Here's a pic of one of his stocks, with a Nesika action and a Lilja barrel sitting in it. This was well before he started inletting for Nesika's, we had to do quite a bit of modification to a 700 model. Super rigid stocks, and extremely well behaved off a bench rest.

Dave,
That sure is purdy. What caliber is it?

Definately looks like a real nice shooter.

The dollar signs are reeling in my head like a slot machine right now.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Dear Moderators- Please remove the pic of the rifle in this post before it causes me to have to chunck the wife and morgage the house. I am making a Christmas list now. The only thing purdier is one square section of land covered in pdogs with the keys to the gate in my hand.

Mike, it's a .243AI. Shoots very, very well.

Lavoy, that section of prairie dogs sure sounds purdy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OK now I feel that I’m not worthy! I thought when I put 5 rounds into an iron maiden at
1000 I was doing darn good! but 3" @ 1000 DAMN! The rifle I used was an old Mauser action
with a cheap ol’ Parker Hale 14 twist 308, I must say though for a $390.00 dollar total cost it aint
bad. My gunsmith has worked with Mausers for longer than I’ve been alive so he knows lots of
good tricks, nothing better than to have a good gunsmith as a friend and lots of people that know
what they are doing to help teach and mold you to shoot that kind of groups not to mention the
most important PRACTICE! I did however find out that when you start shooting WAY out there
glass is a big factor, I’m in the process of saving for better glass so I might do some competitive shooting next year. I shot a 5" group but then I woke up in a cold sweat and wanted to go back to that dream. Gotta admit 3" @ 1000 is a real feat to be accomplished and he deserves the
recognition cause that’s something to be real proud of, not to mention a lot of work.

No!
He was talking about light and heavy varmint classes, not unlimited rail guns.

Yeah, it blows my mind too that a bag setup can be that quickly repeatable.

Benchrest is not my sport but I am amazed at what the masters of it can do.

Jack

Not only does Bill shoot really well but he builds up some nice rifles too when he gets a chance. The best thing is, he one heck of a nice guy!! You need to see some of the groups shot with his 6BR wildcat called a 6mmBS! NO!! it stands for his name!! LOL!!

Jack,
You gotta be kidding me!

Wow, I am really impressed now!!! That's ultra fast shooting for sure!!!

Where did you read the article?

I just got my August PS magazine today. I figured it was in there but it looks like it's not. Jim Borden does do some talking about the 1000 yard shoot coming up in the IBS News.

Jack,
I have seen it around. Looks like I'm gonna have to pick it up. I believe I saw a copy at Sportsmans warehouse here in town.

One of our members? I wonder who that could be.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
