I have been out 6 nights for a total of 29 sets and have seen 2 coyotes-I will not see them again 😊. I have had a few responses and heard a few on their own but nothing within a mile of me at best guess. Everyone back this way knows the weather/conditions have been in the 'crapper' but they gotta eat and make little ones for so little activity.
Anyhow, this one Monday night was in my 2nd set and came to a den raid sound after 20min of distress, howls, & socials. I was facing N with a N drift. Gun was positioned for a shot to the E as that was the biggest and thickest cover and only 80ish from me. Wouldn't you know it, he comes fast from the W. and is only 40-50y up the hill from me about the same level as the call when I see him. I mute, hit record, get the tripod moved and he must have caught some of this cause up the hill he goes. I get situated for the ~30deg uphill shot and bark. He stopped and died--I have slipped broadheads though the hearts of deer that did not leave a blood trail like he did. Male, ~85yds silent.
Next taker was last night (Sat). Suz was watching a couple of the grands 40miles N so no Valentines dinner out and I went hunting.
1st set of the night (shoulda went home after it as the other sets were duds). Made quite a bit of "crunch" noise going up the hill going in as the snow was crusted over but figured nothing over the ridge could hear me. I am facing E with a S 5mph wind on a small hayfield all uphill from me. Call is only ~25 in front of me. Started with 7-8min of rabbit and bird then into several intermittent howls from "Luna". I answered on the dia. a few howls then quiet for about a minute then started socials. He came in to whines. I see the head on the skyline and mute and have to move the gun again cause I have it set up for my "tight" shot to the woods line to my right. Vid tells the rest. I decided to let him keep coming until he turned, another 20y or so he would have been in a dip and out of sight, so I barked and he fell over. Male Silent 100y
Now to see if the last half of the month picks up.
