Personally for that useage I would consider either the Ruger american or one of the little Mossbergs built on the 4x4 acton. Caliber for yotes and vermin ... heck stick with .223 because its cheap enough and good enough at out the window ranges. If you are plannning on potting the white tales off the bottom of the feed bunks with it of course you would want to step up to something with a bit more heft.

Walmarts all over the country has Remington 700s for $398. That would be my pick.

Absent that, the new CVA Cascade looks pretty slick, and they come threaded for well under $500..

You couldn't melt a Ruger American or Mossberg and pour it on me.

Hello Scott. I recently bought a Tikka T3x compact in 223. It has a 20" 8 twist barrel so if you so desire, it will shoot the heavies really well. Smooth action and a decent trigger that is adjustable and they shoot!! Comes with an extension to make the stock longer if needed to.

Sports World had a Rem BDL Varmint package in 223 for under $500 before X-Mas. But its not really a truck gun with the 24 inch heavy barrel.

I have the CVA Cascade .243 camo version. Have it sighted in, but haven’t hunted with it yet. Not bad for a middle of the road budget rifle. Also have a Winchester XPR .243 I really like the rifle, trigger is very nice. I had to put a cheek riser on it for it to fit me better. Winchester occasionally will have rebates on the XPR. Both rifle barrels are free floated. Both stocks in my opinion are a lot better than the other budget rifles I’ve owned or handled.

Ruger american ranch rifle in 5.56. Short 16" threaded barrel light weight uses ar mags.
The length makes it easy to handle and store in a cab.
They feel cheaply made but work good, not hard to get it to shoot moa groups.

Tikka or an Axis......Or a Ruger American ranch. If you do the Remington 700 option just tack on 140 bucks to the tag price for a Timney trigger. That X Mark pro is the most most disgusting thing ever. I have a 700 ADL in 223 and a CDL in 25-06, both of them broke between 5.5 and 7 pounds from the factory and were never consistent. Absolutely terrible.

I have been shooting coyotes from the truck for years with a Tikka, so it maneuvers and navigates the cab well on demand, also zero gun problems.
The .22-250 is serious and reaches extra with few runners.

Several guys locally have had repeat magazine problems with the Rugers, Ruger is good about sending replacements. A couple of them have found that loading under capacity has helped.

I have a smith that can fix a trigger for a lot less than a Timney cost.

I don't, But I do love the Timney's.

Yeah. Honestly I got a great deal on the ADL tactical in 223 so it was not really a big deal to put a nice trigger in it. But when I dropped 750 on a CDL I was beside myself that they would put a trigger in a rifle like that.

Not to thread hijack....OP keep us updated on what you decide on. I was extremely happy with my Axis II XP in 223.

Penrose on 81st and 145th usually have some decent deals. My TC Pred. was on the shelf there. IDK if it still is but it shot really well and I worked the trigger over and it has a real nice trigger. Its 223 and all camo. I bought it new and it doesn't have very many rounds through it. I sold it to them when I bought the Tikka.

The stock trigger in my Remington 700 ADL is super good. It's the X whatever it's called. I figured they were all pretty decent triggers but I don't have any experience with any except for mine. I have to have a good trigger in order to shoot good and that rifle shoots better than I can.

I went with the Ruger Amer Predator in 22-250 because of the 1/10" twist. 69 grain handloads print under MOA, best factory (Sierra Prairie) shoots just about 1/2.
