Feeder destroyer? Maybe….

About 6 weeks ago I had a big hog take down a feeder that has been in the same place for 10 years with now problem. He took I to down in camera in 10 minutes. Big bore for a big boar!

I set up to kill him and killed a 221 pound boar eating at the downed feeder. Figured that was him. Then after I put the feeder back and and staked the legs with T posts, I got pictures of a big boar that had me wondering if I had gotten the right boar.

This morning I went back after I saw a big boar on cell camera last couple of days. He was there a couple of times last night when I checked the camera this morning and he was there at 5:20am when I checked the camera at the club gate.

I got in the stand right before daylight and right was it was getting like I saw a hog run under the feeder and disappeared in the brush. A lot of tall weeds around the feeder since we have not mowed yet. (Plan to do that Wednesday next week). 10 minutes later the feeder went off and almost immediately he was back out. I lined up for shot with then Horizon 6.5 CM and put a 143 eldx right in the should. (I usually got for the next but had just cleaned the rifle no fowling shot yet.)

He bolted into the tall weeds and was gone. I hoped he didn’t go far, or finding him was going to be trouble. I walked down to look and waded off into the weeds in the direction he went. Head high weeds new brush. Not good! I walked a little ways seeing nothing and walked along the edge of the creek bottom at borders the 2 year plantation. Nothing. I circled back to the feeder coming in behind the feeder and there he lay 5 yards BEHIND the feer. I didn’t see him when I walked up and he was 5 yards from where he was standing when I shot him but couldn’t see him for the high weeds and grass. I guess he ran left and immediately ran a circle to the right to end up back where he was but 5 yards farther out. Pretty lucky!

I took this picture and loaded him up on the hitch hauler after getting the truck in a low spot. Hauled him to the skimming rack to weigh on my digital scale. I took so heart girth measurement of 43 inches which is 232 pounds according to the chart. He was 223 pounds in the scale. The girth measurement is pretty consistently +/- 10 pounds.

So, was the actually the one who tore down the feeder? I guess I will have to see if I get another big one on camera or not.

Nice hog!! Gotta love it when they show up during daylight hours and a good wind!! Got a tape in the truck now for the “next” big one!

Nice work on a biggun!

I don't know much about hogs, other than I'm glad they aren't a problem here where I live. That one looks like he's been around awhile. Is there a way to estimate the age of wild/feral swine? I imagine the food availability is a huge factor in how big they get. Just curious if there's any way to gauge how old they are within some reasonable range.
