Feeding dogs raw meat?

Is it safe to feed your dog raw meat? I know logically it should be okay, but I'm curious as to if it really is or not. Didn't know if say I killed a rabbit if I could give him some of the meat???

I use to give my dogs deer meat raw. It never seemed to bother them. Some say it can cause worms, but it never did with my dogs.

I'm a butcher so I feed my dogs lots of raw meat. The only real problem is if you switch back and forth from raw to dry food. It seems to take their digestive systems a couple of days to get used to it. Oh, and if it's for inside dogs wildgame seems to give them a bit more gas?

I tried while I lived in Germany for awhile. Started out cooking it, then working back to less and less cooked till it got to raw, but my Rotties stomach just wouldn't handle it. Didn't take 3 mins and it was back up. Dunno why after all the other stuff he would eat without a problem.

Yeah, our dogs fart a lot during deer season. We give our dogs deer scraps all the time along with their regular dry food. There's nothing the lab likes more than a fresh deer head, except maybe for raw rabbit, which WILL come up EVERY time.

I feed my dogs, dogfood, and raw meat, they get everything from whatever game is in season,to hog carcasses, and plenty of jackrabbits, or whatever else they catch.
Worms are an issue here, I just worm them regular, the savings on feed is worth the minimal cost of wormer.

I think you forgot to add sage rats on this list---seen them chomp down a few of them during the season.

I wouldn't feed them raw pork or rabbits. They can get tapes worms from the rabbits and triconosis(?spelling) from the pork.

I do feed my dogs raw deer meat.

This is the correct answer. It is what they were designed to eat. I feed a good quality food to my hunting German Shorthaired Pointer all year. During hunting season she gets Dove, quail, Chukar and Pheasant hearts raw when I clean the birds. She also gets Deer meat raw when I am cutting it up for Jerky or if I am cooking Deer steaks.

I asked my Veterinarian and she said it is not a problem and is good for their digestive system.

Maybe dogs shouldn't get "raw pork, or rabbits", I guess every hog dogger,I ever met, is wrong, and I am wrong for letting my dogs eat raw pork.
As for rabbits, the dogs can get worms from them. I think I covered that in an earlier post.
In 20+ years I have never lost a dog to "poor feed", so I'll just do what works for me, and let others make their own choices.

Really Duane, you were right by adding the fact that you wormed them on a regular basis..yes worms are an issue but if you worm your dogs it will be ok...main thing is..if you feed your dogs pork or rabbit...use a good wormer periodically also. I'm a little nervous about rabbits because their bones are brittle and can perforate their bowels if swallowed...I lost a dog that ate chicken bones and this happened (raided the garbage can when I was gone). He wouldn't eat for about 3 days only drink water. I took him to the vets but it was to late.

Wilson, that's terrible that you lost one.
I one time had a dog get a "rabbit bone" stuck in his throat. We were able to save him here at the house, he would have not made it to town. His throat was scratched, and started to swell shut. We just got lucky.
If my dogs never ate a rabbit, that would be fine with me, but when we are killing a few hundred rabbits a night, a few nights a week. There are dead rabbits all over the ranch.
There is no practical way to keep the dogs from eating them. The best I can do is worm often.

My dogs do the best on raw meat. Downside is eye burning, dry heave, quality gas. I'm sure the inside of a live goat smells better.

I give my dogs raw bones but nothing cooked. Sometimes I get old layers and have them cleaned and gutted at the Hutterites., then grind them raw, bones and all>

all the deer meat scraps we get and when we scrape hides that fat gets mixed into the dog food. my cuz also gets lots of cows for r bait pile and sometimes if theres alot of good meat we will chunk that off and mix with dog food. and sometimes even beaver and muskrat. I worm my hounds on a regular basis due to all that. never take off dog food. its always mixed in

Try feeding canned Alpo sometime! That stuff will make you evacuate the house! My pit used to love it, but he had to be fed outside if he was eating that stuff!!

Never had a problem feeding them raw meat scraps. Worm 'em and watch 'em smile when you feed 'em.

i know that pork carries the tricina(sp) worm, which correct me if im wrong atacks the host's muscle, will a wormer remove thsi type of parasite or does it only remove worms from the dogs digestive tract?
