im tryin to make a food plot in a small field probley 1/4 of an acre big with a feww big trees in it.i cut down the small trees and need a way to get the stumps out in a few weeks. i alsoneed to know if any of you use fertilizers from stores like home depot, lowes, orschelens, etc. if so which are they.if not, do you guys think i could?

thanks

andrew

Yes you could. If you are starting from seeds I'd get a 'starter' type fetilizer. This will help to avoid 'burning' the fragile young plants. After they get going about any type will be of some help. If you use a high nitrogen lawn type it will really help after things are growing already. Just avoid any of the "Weed & Feed" type spreads. Those types have the broad leaf weed killers in them.

it all depends on what kind of plant .also some plants prefer full sun so you may need to cut the big tree's also.

the stumps range from 1-12" in diameter and im only 14 and dont have the money for a backhoe or anything of that nature. im hoping to work for my uncle over the summer in landscaping and irrigation for some money but i dont know.these are the seeds im using:

http://store.evolved.com/home/products/harvest/annuals/throwandgro.aspx

i got to planting the food plot last weekend and i limed it with 50lb of lime. its only about 1/12 of an acre right now but i plan to widen it over the summer. i also put some 12-12-12 all porpose fertilizer on it (40 lbs) and the throw and grow says it needs 13-13-13 fertilizer so i think its close enough. im hoping to make some money in the next few weeks and plan on fertilizing it whenever i get the money to fertilize it. one more thing, can i over fertilize it?

if you click the first blue link, it will show an A. this is where our property is at. would you guys consider this the south or the north?

Thanks

Andrew

I'm 15 and my boss has a 225 HP JD that will pull those stumps with ease. Do you mean in the country or just in missouri. If in missouri north in the country south. Does your dad have any friends that farm? If he does can he run a tractor?

Hi Andrew,

Do you know any one who has a backhoe or a tractor? If you do, because of your age, maybe you could offer to trade labor for labor. Say a day of their labor for 2 days of your labor. You may be surprised at the outcome. Just a thought.

Good Luck to you my young friend. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Falconman,
I live near St Louis but I have a farm and hunt near Linn, MO I drive right by your place whenever I go between. If I had a good way to bring our tractor over there, I'd help you with those stumps but I have a recommendation that Might be just as good. My first question is, How are you working up the ground. it looks like you are just raking with the throw and go but with the perennial mix, are you plowing with a pull behind? If not, and you are working the ground by hand, just go around the stumps and cut them as close to the ground as you can. Then drill holes in the top with the largest drill bit you have or hit the top with an axe several times to cut the top They'll be fertilizer in a couple of years and your perrenial plants should still be growing. As Far as North vs. South, I've found that we can plant either way in our region and they'll still do well. Just don't try to start new plants in the middle of the summer. You could probably plant until the middle of June since we've got some decent rain and have some more coming but then I'd hold off until it starts to rain again in Sept-Oct. As far as fertilizer, You should probably put some with it when you plant and then I'd wait for any more until fall also. You can over-fertilze in the summer and burn the plants. 10-10-10 or 12-12-12 is fine, The MFA in your area sells fertilzer in bulk too but the last time I checked, last fall, it was more expensive than Lowe's, Go Figure. Good luck with what you're doing. I was almost thirty before I got into doing the type of thing you are starting. Bravo!!

before i planted any of it, i used a hand tiller of my dads. took about 8 hours to do it but its already around 6" in some spots but only 2-3" in other spots. i think it'll pay off though cause last year i saw a 9-11 point buck 50yds from me in thich brush and couldnt get a shot with my bow. hopfully this plot will get him into a habit so i can get a shot. ive also noticed some white clover growing where i didnt put any seed, about 20yds from the food plot, so its lookin good.

If the stumps are the type that sprout new growth you can cut them down to ground level and drill 4-5 3/8" holes in them and fill the holes with "Blackberry and Brush Killer", use it straight and don't dilute it like the instruction say for spraying. That will fix the stumps. Let everything get up and growing and then use the cheapest 16-16-16 or something close to that ratio and watch it grow. Put up a 'trailcam' and post the pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If it's already 6" in spots, you're good. Wait until late august, Mow and spread some fertilizer. Enjoy the hunting, show us the success pictures and re-evaluate in the spring and work on the patches that aren't growing back. There will be some patches of annuals that will need redone but you should have a productive plot for years to come.

I can put up some success pictures but I can't afford a trail cam.
