So I been into predator hunting now for about 5 years and finally killed my first cat. I decided today would be the day I would dedicate the entire day to bobcats. I have never done this before. I normally do 12-18 minute stands and that's it. If one shows up, cool. If not I'm on to the next stand.

Well today I said, I and sitting 45 minutes at every stand. Well that's a long time and some I could only hack 30. I also said I'm letting the coyotes walk if they come in. I have never purposely let a coyote walk until today. I let 2 go and it was so really tough on me. It made it even worse when no bobcat showed on either of those stands. I also saw 2 badgers. That got a pass but that's only because I couldn't get my rifle off my pack quick enough.

I went into a area that all roads are blocked. I walked 10.2 miles and made 8 stands. I was up 24 hours straight because I worked last night and headed out as soon as I got off.

On my 4th stand of the day at the 11min 30sec mark of some bird sounds this bobcat showed up. I kept watching my down wind because I figured a coyote was gonna circle me, but to my surprise, this guy showed up. He stopped and sat down at about 125-150yds and was quartering to me. I put my cross hairs on his left front shoulder, squeezed and he hit the dirt. I was way pumped. Here he is.

Tomorrow I am going to flesh him out and put him on a board. I always hear guys say he measured so and so inches. So how do you measure him when he's on the board? Nose to Tail?

Bobcats seem to going for a lot of money right now so I'm hoping to get a little cash for him.

I shot him with my AR .223 that I built. I am shooting 55gr berger varmint bullets. It has a hollow tip. It made a little hole going in and almost came out the middle of his rib cage on the opposite side. I took a pic cause you can see the bullet right on the edge of the muscle but but I didn't post it because I wasn't sure if someone would complain.

I sold 11 Bobcats today and the good males went for 250.00 and smaller females varied from 70.00 to 190.00. Makes me wish I had tried to salvage the ones I shot with the 25 DTi that were tore up so bad I figured they weren't worth skinning.

All that excitement of getting your first cat and your gonna sell it. I'd say wall mount and a great story of your first ever bobcat hanging on the wall is worth more then a 1-200 dollars you will get for it...

Nice bobcat. Congratulations on your first.

Does anyone know a reputable fur buyer where I could send some furs to, someone who would grade fairly? I'm not aware of any buyers here locally.

Ya I wouldn't mind keeping it but I have a bear rug, bull elk, and a bunch of mule deer horn on plaques that are just in my garage. My wife doesn't want them in the house and I cant really blame her. See my house just really isn't set up for that stuff. I agree that they would just look outta place in there. So rather than spend money on a rug or just let what could be a couple hundred bucks sit in my garage, I figured why not make a little money. Maybe if I can only get $100-200 I'll keep it but it seems guys are getting higher prices than that. Maybe mine wont be in that category for good money but I'll wait and see and decide what to do when I find out its worth.

Congrats! That looks like a good size cat.

+1 on keeping it... you might regret selling it. For $35 you can send it off and at least get it tanned and hang the pelt up in your garage or somethin...Its a dang bobcat! Sell the next one maybe. Good work. I know your feeling I just got my first cat a few weeks ago also.. doing lifesize.

Congrats man! Texas cats may only bring $100-$200, but that's a nice furred up New Mexico cat. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to find out how much it's worth. Western cats averaged $426 in the NAFA auctions, last week.

That thing is for sure going to get $500+ if it's over 40". Judging off the pics it's gonna get 700-800 if it's over 40" I had some desert bobcats from Arizona that were over 40" go for $975 each and some 36" go for $775. So you will definitely make some money off him!
