Work out the kinks later,.We use to burn JP-4 in some of those Army gas fed stoves now those puppys would get HOT!.

Rule of thumb you feel safe with it? You sleep with it!

Oh, I do, I just have never used one in a tent, that is why I ask if you needed a double or triple wall through the stove jack in the tent.

One time I had a piece of galvanized pipe on the stove in my shop here on the farm and it had been burned enough that the coating was gone from it but when the insurance inspector saw it they said I had to replace it or they wouldn't insure my building. Funny thing was it was a homemade stove and wasn't UL approved or anything but they said the stove was OK.

If it gets to warm I'll open a window. One sure thing about a tent stove, when the fire is out, the temps outside are the same inside right now!
Vaportrail, I believe some of those Army campers tried to burn those tents down!
To wake up in a tent to a nice tracking snow that has fallen over night is pure delight. I left my tent one morning at 0745 after drinking a pot of coffee. Walked not over 50 yards, shot a buck and back to put on a fresh pot by 0815. Now if I can get these coyotes to put up with that type of laziness. Heaven on Earth!

justshoot,
I wouldn't know how to act if I had a warm tent. I camp out of a 5X7 two man tent and there is barely room for my dog and myself in it. I have been a few nights this fall when it got down to 26 degrees and it wasn't too bad. One morning I turned on my little propane heater for about 5 minutes and warmed the tent up before I got dressed and that made it a lot more bearable.

We were killin' coyotes though and that made it worth it. One frosty morning I left my dog in camp, walked 150 yards and called one in and was back in camp before the sun was hardly above the horizon.

Waiting for the weather to break right now and hoping to get out and do some camping in the snow soon.

I had the wonderful opportunity of being on the "Hey You roster" to receive OJT as a door gunner back in "83" for 30 days with a black hawk unit in Germany (Winter training)

and it was normal practice for the team to spike the kero heaters with a 50/50 mix of JP-4 and kero for extra heat!

Your correct Huntsman, I don't camp, nor have ever camped in a tent with a wood-burner.

However, I've spent many yrs in the fire service & seen my share of fires. Those wood burning fires were caused by faulty installation/[even professionaly installed], lack of maintenance up-keep & or use of non-rated/tested fire equipment.

Sure a person can get by useing non-rated equipment or faulty installation. Well, alteast until an "acident happens"

Anyway have fun camping, stay safe.

Jaskindistress, this summer would be a good time to make a tent. 6' X 8' is a good size for one man and dog. It is really easier than you may think. If you want full info I could email it to you. E bay has some nice stoves for under $100.

Justshoot,
Yeah, I need to make a canvas tent this summer. I like to camp in the winter too and having some heat inside would make it nice. I have a 30' camper but I like to just load my gear on the ATV and be able to get places where the camper won't go.

The stove wouldn't be a problem at all. My brother and i have built 3 wood furnaces and several stoves. The wood stove I have in my shop right now is one that we built mostly out of parts we salvaged from one of our old hay balers. The firebox is made from the square bale chamber and the rounded top is made from a piece of heavy 24" diameter pipe.

I forgot to ask you, is yours made from a 55 gallon barrel? We made one once from a 30 gallon drum and it made a nice little stove. We always made our barrel stoves laying down with the door in the end though. I can see why you would want it upright though to save space in your tent.

I hope to see some pictures of your "snow camp" with some coyotes hanging soon.

Stovejack in and wood burning! The temps now is 26 deg. and the wind is howling. Cozy inside! 15 gallon cut off at the first ring. An old WWll vet told me on their tents they used a metal pie plate to go over the pipe and against the tent, on the outside. I've used this and it works great. That will be added. Also put on an outside pipe support.
