Firearm or magazine restrictions for coyotes in Colorado?

I just spent like two hours reading everything I could find on the Colorado Department of Wildlife web page. The only thing I can find is where it says, “Coyotes may be taken with any handgun or rifle.” I thought I remember that there is a 5 round magazine restriction, but I can not find it anywhere in the Regs. I my AR ok to go?

I just doubled checked and saw nothing under the small game section for rifles. I know othersthat use the larger clips. Bring it and another gun just in case.

Unless you're hunting during big game season. Try convincing the warden that you're in a management area during elk season with a 30 rd. mag and only hunting coyotes. Good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have not been able to find anything. I have a 20 round clip but only load 5 just in case. Plus .204 ammo is a little pricey to empty a full clip on a dog(s) but of coarse i usually dont miss /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I have only really needed a sixth shot once or twice. Unless its a pack or your PO'ed at a single you should not need it. Only advantage would be multiple stands without having to carry some extra ammo in the pockets or go back to the truck.

I agree with you there the warden is going to be asking some questions. But the case wouldn't be real hard to make when it is a .223 and if I am out walking about buring elk season with my AR I will also have my Foxpro that has no big game sounds on it at all but lots of predator sounds on it.

But I am going to do some more checking to make sure what the actual law is though. I need to just talk to a warden and not one of the front desk people. The regs as far as I could find don't state anything about mag size.

That buys you nothing with a warden (except a citation). The reg says a mag capable of holding "no more than" five rounds, for big game. You can swear on a stack of Bibles that you were only hunting coyotes, but in his eyes, you're guilty until your lawyer proves you are innocent in a court of law. If you've got $4 grand to throw away on a lawyer, just to prove a point, then rock on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

NASA calm down i was not even thinking during Big Game season i was talking in general just like last night i went out with only five. Just a general practice i have to hold myself from blowing through ammo.

Thanks SKB,

Per the regs:

E. Furbearers
1. Any rifle or handgun.
2. Any shotgun.
3. Handheld bows and crossbows

Does not mention capacity any where that i scanned through for furbearers.

also dont forget that:
during big game seasons even if you are hunting predators you cant have anything over 22 cal for predators.so the 223 is great.but you better not have an elk tag or deer tag in your pocket with a 223.
you can however shoot predators with anything you want if you have a biggame liscense.7 mag, whatever.

Nasa,
This should clear it up a little.

"B. It shall be unlawful to hunt any game birds, small game mammals or furbearers, with a
centerfire rifle larger than .23 caliber during the regular deer and elk seasons west of
Interstate 25, unless the hunter holds an unfilled deer or elk license for the season he is
hunting."

It does not say anything about capacity of rifles while taking furbearers during big game season but i am assuming since you can not use anything bigger than a .23 cal you would be considered under the furbearers regulations. If you have over a .23 cal you HAVE to have a big game license and therefore HAVE to follow the big game guidelines. Its kinda a gray area. But i know if you do indeed have a unfilled big game tag your probly going to get some grief.

If a GW is going to go after you about the capacity of a rifle during a big game season he will have to issue you a bunch of tickets.
-Over the 5 round in the mag and 1 in the chamber
-Not wearing orange
-No big game license
-To small of caliber
-Probly legal daylight issues
-Electronic calls

There are more but i think the GW would have a hard time making it look like your big game hunting with all these other "violations" if you were predator hunting during big game season.
Just my 2 cents.

There are no firearm or mag restrictions on rifles for predator hunting in Colorado with the exception of the caliber during big game. If you are using an AR/223 with a 30 round mag the warden would have a hard time proving you were in violation of any law. You may have to spend some money but in the end you would not likely be fond guilty of any violation. And you may have a cast for frivolous prosecution.

You are right cause the regs state anything larger than a .23 cal bullet you must have an unfilled tag. But the .223 is clearly smaller than the regs .23 so he would not be able to sight anything. It probably would be a smart idea to have the regs highlighted and with you if that were the case though.

But to save some grief and some time it will most likely be the safe route to just shoot them with the .308 and call it good.
