Fishing advice for Galveston...?

Planning a visit to Galveston early June…

Anybody have any insights on fishing there, then…

Beach, pier, charter… Species, gear… etc. Looking into anything I might be able to get tight lines for myself and a crowd of relatives!

(LOTS and lots of PNW coldwater experience… zero Gulf experience!)

TIA

We booked an offshore charter well in advance, twice, and never got out of Galveston Bay. Weather was too bad and the seas were too rough both times. The captain of the offshore charter did set us up both times with an inshore charter and we fished for black drum in the bay. It was a good time and we caught a lot of fish.
May want to consider this if you want to increase your odds of putting a group of people on fish.

Fished the Gulf and the "bays" or jetties quite a bit but never out of Galveston. We like to head further south near Port Aransas and Rockport, and even further south into Matagorda Bay. I have a friend who used to guide and we pay for his time out on the boat and bait.

There's a number of decent bay fishing/jetty fishing charters, as well as some that go into the gulf. Stay away from the party boats that take you out as there will be tons of people on the boat, and depending on the day, could be quite miserable for you without proper preparation. If you hadn't already gotten your charter anyway.

Chrystal Beach is where my BIL likes to fish from the shoreline during that time of year too. He's had good success with black tip shark, as well as other species.

Srry I just saw this thread and didn't realize when you had posted about a month prior. Good luck! let us know how you fair when you're back

Heading there next week, got a green light waterfront rental house for both my crew and my brother's crew. Looking forward to some tight lines!

Really only a couple of peirs after the hurricanes of the early 2000s

Was some good fishing on a couple of the old piers that got wiped out.

Never been to this one, but I have been to this one.

Pier fishing is usually best at night in my experience.

I have also been on this party charter a couple of times. Caught fish, but not a trip of a life time either time.

Best trips I have been on were fishing the jetty. Can catch some big trout, red fish, sharks and Spanish mackerel most commonly.

You google up plenty of guides, just the charters I have used any where I fished

Couldn't keep the catfish off the hooks at the houses we rented. Also caught little versions of black drum, silver perch, redfish, and my niece caught a c.6lb sheepshead. All from the yards and docks. Well worth getting the canal houses for kid fishing.

We went to the surf and the ship canal and found good fishing for bigger stuff, including dozens of the aforementioned turd rustlers (catfish.) One skewered me in the pinky and it was dripping pretty good while I was wading up to my bellybutton in the surf, and a few minutes later a little shark (about 2') whirled and bolted from the wave that was about to crash into me!

The Jetty produced for us too, Yellowhammer, it was loaded with smaller speckled trout and we caught them at will. Lots of other species too, just change bait and presentation.

My brother found some larger redfish beyond the surf from the state park.

Good time in the hot salty!

We went last week to the jetty. Ended up with 5 keeper trout. No red fish but caught a couple of lady fish and had 3 or 4 Spanish mackerel hooked up but they came off at the boat. Got some smaller circle hooks for next time, so maybe they will stay hooked next time. Hope to do again in a couple of weeks. Need tor hurricane to clear out.
