+1 on the variable why hamper yourself with limited FOV and X's when you could have the best of both worlds with a variable. My main calling rifles wear 1x4x20 or 1.5x6x40 scopes with a 2.5x10x40 on a 22-250 that I keep around for really open country hunting, hardly ever use it.
The only fixed scope I use are on target rigs and an old Weaver K-1.5 that is on a heavy cover whitetail rig. Don't do much deer hunting anymore but it will get change out to a 1x4x20 before the next hunt.
