I have a 4.5 x 14 on mine but leave it set at 8x and focused for 200 yds. and normally shoot from 50 to about 250 yds.
My belief is that when you out power your binoculars with the scope I mis-judge the the shot as being closer when I take aim. Hope that makes sense. So I have been leaving it on 8 power. With the success I have had doing this I wouldn't mind having a fixed 8x but I have only seen one on the market made by Weaver.
Variables scopes give the best of both worlds and if you want a fixed power just leave it at that power.
