Fixed power scope for varmint hunting

I recently picked up a Remington 722, 222 cal, and it came with an old fine reticle fixed power Bushnell 4x scope. I was going to replace it with a variable power, but I have grown to like it. I shot some half inch groups with it to my surprise. How many of you varminters use a fixed power?

Fixed 6x on one of my ARs. I love it. I have variables on some other rifles but rarely change the power anyway. I have been trying to find another Simmons 6x40 Pro hunter but they stopped making them.

I used to use a Weaver K4 for everything for over 20 years and LOVED it. THen I got the bug for a variable. I'm going back to a 6X Leupold w/a long range reticule. Variables are nice when shooting prairie dogs way out there, but I'm making everything simple from now on. Keep the fixed!

What kind of trouble do yo anticipate?

I have a K-1.5 on my 218 Bee, great little scope for calling 150-200 yards is about max for me with it.

I've used fixed power 24x scopes for 35 years. Never a problem till I started hunting railroad tracks.

I just like fixed power scopes more.

I bet it's a benchrest scope.??

I have 3 of these scopes. One is an old Leupold M8 24x fixed, another is a Weaver 24T (fixed 24x) and a Weaver 36T (fixed 36x).

Never had a problem with them hunting fields. But last season we were hunting on RR Tracks. With the Rails and stone I couldn't see past 100 yards.

I ended up using a varible on about 6x.

But I'm partial to fixed power copes.

I believe the 36x is what today's benchrest shooters use. There was a myth awhile back that 36x was too powerful, so some bench shooters used 24x, but 36x was optimum. I'd like to try out one of these.

I sold a spare Leupold M8 36x to a benchrest shooter 2 years ago. He told me they are going as highas 40x for benchrest. You'd be amazed how these high power scopes help at the range. They will help you eliminate a lot of bad habits.

The 24x was all I used for 25 years. I'm still not sold on variable scopes though I have 2 of them.
