I sold a spare Leupold M8 36x to a benchrest shooter 2 years ago. He told me they are going as highas 40x for benchrest. You'd be amazed how these high power scopes help at the range. They will help you eliminate a lot of bad habits.
The 24x was all I used for 25 years. I'm still not sold on variable scopes though I have 2 of them.
