flextone echo volume boost ?

hows it going now?

i bought a echo er1 the other day, great caller for the money! anyhow i think it needs a bit more volume for some of the coyote howls, not a big deal but i have a need to mess with stuff anyhow, so i started to investigate. i came across a post on here where they took the speaker grill off to get more volume, well they had some pics of the caller apart and it shows the cone speaker as being rated at 8 ohm 3 watt.
Now i aint no electrical engineer, however i have never seen a small amplifier chip that wont handle a 4 ohm load(could be some amps that only hndle 8 ohm, i just never seen any) but my point is, if the amp will handle it,replacing the 8 ohm cone speaker with a 4 ohm one should boost the volume level. anybody know what amp chip is in the caller ? i gotta wait atleast till my 30 day return warranty is up before i crack it open.
if this were to work it would be an easy volume boost!
my personal opinion, if they open up the system so you can add sounds or shuffle them around and keep the cost down around where it is now, i can see other call manufacturers scratchin their noggins, wondering what gives! this is a excellent machine for the scratch!
so does anybody know anything about the electronics of this caller?

thanks coop

If coyotes could fly.

Cone speakers belong in cars and trucks.

hey doggin, i happen to agree with ya, aint gonna happen, but im allowed to dream.
anyhow i couldn't take it no more, i had to see what amp was in this thing. you all gonna like what i got to say here!

first you do as you please, but i aint responsible for anybody elses actions or damage they cause!
(You need to read the data sheet too!)
I took it apart and found that the speakers are indeed 3 watt 8 ohm. the amp chip is a tda1517 its a common portable stereo chip amplifier. its rated to drive 2 speakers at 6 watts each into a 4 ohm load. Doggin i read your other post, they didnt cheap out on the amp, they crippled it by using 8 ohm speakers!
The power is there already at the ends of the speaker wires !, but half gets used getting through the the speaker! now why they did this i dont know, could be any number of reason i suppose. the good news is i hooked up a 4 ohm 10 watt speaker and the difference in volume is just what i was after, its actually louder than the front horn speaker. Sweeeet!
now i suppose ill lose some battery time but im sure it will be minimal, now where to find a 4ohm horn speaker that size?
Hope this is helpful to you folks seeking more volume!

you all have a good day now!

Good luck with that. I've looked for years.

I can't even find the small horn speakers like FP uses in a lot of their callers. I've read they are an alarm speaker. Can't confirm or deny that. I just know I can't find any like em.

Sooooo, this 4 ohm horn speaker you tried with the Echo, HOW MUCH louder was it that the 8 ohm horn that's in it? Barely noticeable? More than barely? A bunch? A WHOLE bunch?

well, i dont have decibel meter or anything, but i can tell ya that its loud enough that i didnt turn it the whole way up inside the house and it was really uncomfortable, i could turn the other speaker up and it wasnt a problem. however it wasnt the horn speaker that i changed it was the cone speaker in fact the speaker came from an altec lansing speaker system, i had to grind off the tabs on the corners to get it to fit but its the right diameter. only problem with it is that the cone isnt made from mylar or whatever they use, its a paper cone, if it gets wet its done for. i just gotta find a 3" 4 ohm marine speaker, im lookin already.
And as far as speakers like foxpro, well somebody obviuosly manufactures them, question is are they a proprietary part and only manufactured for foxpro ? Ive heard that they are alarm horn too, except if i understand it, you have to remove a transformer and a tone generator ?, dont know about that either, but thanks now i have another lead on a small horn speaker.
one more thing im thinkin about doing, is adding (2) jacks one for use with the internal speakers (open circuit jack) and one that shuts off the internal speakers as soon as its plugged into(closed circuit jack) this way i eliminate the switch and still preserve the stereo aspect of all the external and internal speakers. if i use 2 external speakers i can control them just like the internal ones. (each jack carries both channels and i will need to wire it properly for 2 speakers on the other end)
to be quite honest i only screw around with this stuff cause i get bored when i cant serve up lead samiches for critters.
Sometimes it pays off sometimes not, i really dont need this call louder, i got louder callers, i just like this call alot for whatever reason and one of these days if i get real bored, ill get my buddy who is an ic chip designer to help me hack into the sounds if its possible ? may not be possible ? but i aint that bored yet!

hope that helps ya, doggin
you all have a good day now!

oopps sorry !

wanted to say also, ideally a 4 0hm speaker rated at 6 watts will give you the most volume you can wring out of it.

thanks coop
