Fluting medium heavy barrel

Can this be done to a medium heavy barrel, or is it cheaper and safer to just buy a heavy barrel already fluted? Lastly, Can a heavy barrel even be put on a Rem 700 SPS?

Just wondering. I am more and more dissapointed in my SPS every day. I want to get rid of it, but I am going to lose my butt on it and my wife isn't going to be happy about this. She is already upset about me spending so much money already.

If I fix the accuracy problem, bed it, float the barrel, will it be worth it?

Nice to hear someone having a similar problem. My POI is def off, so I wasn't sure how far to go with this particular gun. For all I know, I could send it back for warranty work, comes back and they say it meets their standards and then would not have know which route to go.

How much did it cost you?

I will have to go over to Remington site to see what their SPS model looks like. What I want to say right now is that I don't like the idea of fluting a barrel. It seems to me that by cutting flutes in there, you would be changing the harmonics of the barrel. I can see the advantage of heavy barrels, but fluting looks like eye appeal only. A cosmetic thing to cause hunters to dig out their wallet.

I do some gunsmithing and i dont see why you couldn't put a heavy barrel on your 700. People do it all the time. It will require a stock change though. And be sure to have someone competent do it because the barrel will be short chambered and will need to be headspaced. Lastly make sure you like the rifle before you do it because the money you spend will most likley be lost if you ever wanna sell it. Just my opinion.

I would definitely bed the action and float the barrel first. The action has hardly any support at all. This may not fix it at first though. The stock on the SPS I just got was actually warped....pressing on the left side of the barrel. After making sure the barrel was fully floated and the trigger was adjusted down to something reasonable(less than the 8lb pull it came with!!), the gun shoots very well. Like you, I was a little frustrated at first but it can be worked with.
