Flying Turtles!!

Its true! Turtles can fly. When propelled with a 50gr Nosler in a 22-250!!! Swapped out scopes on the Savage and went to the range to dial it in. After getting zero'ed, I caught a glimpse of some turtles sunny on the pond bank. I'm sorry to say there are four less turtles in the world today. I don't think they liked the Savage to much, the Nosler's even less. Longest shot was about 180yds and he flew about 20yds before the parts touched down. LOL I luv turtle shooting!!!

hope moderator old turtle is not offended, but making turtles fly does sound like a whole bunch of fun.

how far do you need to lead them if they are running full out?

I don't think any of them were related to OT. Don't have to lead them, they just set on the pond bank and wait. Nice thing about the 22-250 and the 50 Nosler, not a lot of "evidence" left.

Tim-is it illegal to shoot turtles where you live? They're thick as fleas here.

And what is the justification for killing turtles other than snapping turtle(they are very good to eat). Little pond turtles aren't eating turkeys, fawns, sheep or even bass or pan fish. Every once in a while I get one on my line fishing with worms for panfish, I make every effort to get them back in the lake unharmed.

They will take over a pond given the chance. I'm told they do eat small fish if given the chance. And this is a stocked fishing pong for the members. Why do people shoot crows? Besides that, its fun!

There used to be a few ponds that were infested them not far from where I lived in Katy Texas. The farmer that owned the ponds was mighty grateful to anyone that came out and shot them. I used my S&W K-22 and my buddy a Colt New Frontier and we had a ball. Good times.

I've never seen them in numbers that would be detrimental to the local waters. I quess you just justified shooting them.

Yes
A certain size snapping turtle that can be harvested to eat, but I don't believe they can be shot either..

Yes, shooting turtles in WI, will get you in serious trouble with the law, if anyone reports the shooter. S-S-S comes to mind. There may be an exception for snapping turtles, but I would have to check the regs on that.

When I was a kid, my brother and I were hauling a couple snappers by the tail, down a highway, headed home to get something to dispatch them. A guy in a Cadillac pulls over, and offered us $5 a piece for them. He liked turtle soup! We thought we won the lottery! We held them by the tail, he stuck a stick in their mouth, pulled out the head, and lopped it off with a large knife he had in the trunk...He had done this before! We let the turtles bleed out a bit, and then threw them on some plastic sheet he had in the trunk, got our money, and he left us in cloud of dust! Not the typical end to a snapper in our hands, growing up!

As for crows, we can't shoot them with centerfire rifles, only shotguns...Unless one is a land owner. Then a rimfire rifle is legal...Not sure they meant that to include 17 WSM, but that will wipe that smile right off a crows face at 100 yards!

Y'all must not have enough warm weather to get them started. In Texas they thrive and must be controlled. And yes they do eat fish. In fact, right off my stringer. They usually get a pass from me now, but I'm way up on turtle count and just not mad at them anymore I guess.

Can't shoot them here ether but we used to fish for snapping turtles on one lake we knew they were thick in.

They sure do taste great. One time the neighbor lady that lived next door thought we were bonkers because we brought a live on home in the trunk, we told her it was for dinner and she couldn't believe it. We invited her over for some turtle stew later that night and she thought it was great.

Can't shoot them in Ohio either but we can trap snapping or the softshell turtles or catch them with a hook and jug, but they have to be 11" along the shell to keep, and they are mighty tasty.

This is a medium size the Kershaw Outcast is 16" overall for reference.
The top one my brother is holding we caught walking across a soybean field when we were groundhog hunting,
