FN PS90 for calling coyotes?

Had a friend show me a FN PS90 and he wanted to know what I thought it would do as a coyote calling gun.It is a 5.7X28,I saw a bullet and it looked pretty tiny compared to my 22-250.Don't know about the velocity of factory ammo.It may work for coyotes at under 100 yds but I really don't know,it is compact and has a short barrel.Anyone have any experience with it as a coyote gun? Looks like more of a personal defense weapon.

well there are plenty of people that use a 17HMR. I don't know anything on the FN 5.7 but, would think ballistics would compare to a 22 Hornet.

It is a personal defense firearm, designed to defeat body armor and lightly armored vehicles. While some think Vel is everything, I do not. I believe that while the 5.7 may do ok as a varment catridge at close range, it will lack range, and stopping power at anything over fifty yards. While the FN P90 and it's civilian counterpart, looks impressive on TV sci fi programs with out the full auto, it will lack any sort of range to be effective.

The 5.7x28 round usually penetrates 10-12" with about 50% fragmentation using commercian SS197 loadings. In short, it behaves like a 40gr VMAX from a .223 at about 350 yards. The weapon is capable of @ 1 MOA accuracy.

I know one guy that uses the PS90 for coyotes. He says the gun is very accurate and does well on coyotes. He doesn't use it to call however, and his ranges are much closer 5ft-100 yards. He says the main reason he likes the gun is because its easy to maneuver inside the cab of the truck. I suppose the semi-auto is nice for his purpose too since he doesn't have to let go of the wheel to work the bolt?

If that man is shooting coyotes at 100 yards from a moving truck and chose the PS90 so he can keep his hands on the wheel instead of working the bolt, then that is a man I never want to cross. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I've always considered it to be about like a 22 mag.

Here is what Wik has for info. Sounds like performance varies a bit.

"Some military and police personnel view the 5.7x28 mm SS190 skeptically, although it is touted as a solution to defeating modern body armor. Many regard the SS190 as having insufficient "stopping power" for law enforcement use and this topic has seen much debate. A brief controversy ensued in the United States in 2004 when it was claimed by the Brady Campaign that the civilian-legal SS192 cartridges are able to pierce Level IIA body armor when fired from the Five-seveN pistol. All civilian-legal game hunting cartridges, and even several pistol cartridges, are capable of such penetration. The ability of SS192 to pierce body armor as claimed by the Brady Campaign was not confirmed with facts or data by any authoritative agencies or sources. The ammunition was not restricted for civilian sales, since it is not legally recognized as armor piercing by the BATFE. Nonetheless, FN chose to withdraw the SS192 from the market and replace it with the SS196SR. The SS196SR's performance against armor is diminished due to a heavier varmint bullet (leading to lower muzzle velocity) and a polycarbonate tip that promotes expansion and fragmentation upon impact. The performance of such cartridges are similar to the .22 WMR (.22 Magnum)."

One of these would be a better choice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
