Fox caliber

I saw lots of it this weekend at a gun show for $23 a box. I didn't think that was bad considering there a lot of stores selling .22 mag and .17HMR for $15 fo $17 a box. It's all overpriced in my opinion.

No rimfire should be costing 50 cents a round, period. The 30 cents for mag is also ridiculous

I shoot more fox than anything but like a cartridge that will also work well when a coyote shows up. I mainly use a 204 or a 223 and yes sometimes they make a mess but most of the time I don't even see a hole

Looking for caliber that will work for 150yds
So 22mag is a no go,the 17wsm and 17hmr after reading reviews about inconsistent rimfire ammo and not many rifle options for the wsm I was kind of leaning towards 17 hornet or 22 hornet ammo is avaliable and roughly same cost as other calibers

I have no problem shooting fox at 150 yards with my Heckler & Koch 300 in 22 WMR using Winchester 40 gr HP. That being said, I want everything I shoot with that rifle/caliber at 100 yards or less.

One that I love on fox is my 17 Rem using Hornady 25 gr HP.

Theres no doubt the 22wmr has enough penetration to take a fox at 150yd. But its not an explosive round so you need to be precise and hit them right where you need to. Cant just hold fur and let it fly like the super fast 17s, not explosive nor as flat shooting. Thats why a lot of guys dont like it.

The thing the 22wmr has going for it is that you aren't going to blow out your fur if you hit the shoulder or a chest shot like you will a 20-25gr bullet at 3000+fps.

17's are perfect for light predators. I have not shot that many fox at all, but the ones I have shot with a 223 are almost always blown up. I switched to 17-223 for coyotes because my fur buyer was complaining about entrance holes. In the first couple seasons with the 17-223 I killed about 50, never lost one, and never had another complaint about holes.

My choice for fox is 17AH, or 17 fireball.

17 Fireball is about perfect, but would likely constitute a custom build…and ammo availability is not the best.
I’ve wanted one for years. Did finally find a CZ 221 last year, but haven’t hunted with it yet

Our foxes (grey) are pretty small, torsos the size of a 2-liter coke bottle. 223 and 204 are often too much gun. 17HMR is great, I've killed a lot of foxes with it both 17gr Vmax and 17gr NTX. I think a 17WSM would be "perfect" with just a little more velocity than the HMR.

A 20 Practical typw cartridge (204 bullets in a necked down 223 case) from a 16" AR15, downloaded to 2500-3000fps would be awesome.

I’d stick to rimfires for rifle fox if I still hunted them.

I shot a few with 204 Ruger using the most fur friendly coyote bullet I have found. Berger 35gr Flat Base Hollow Point. Still too much for fox in most cases. Had a couple not make a mess, but most were destroyed. No experience with any other centerfires on fox. Quite a few have fallen to the shotgun though.

I shot a lot of fox with a 22 mag. But every once in a while I would have a coyote come in so I switched to a 17 hornet. Airs fox right out. No exit and it’s hard to find the entry hole. It will take out a coyote if you place the shot right. 22 hornet destroyed my fox as did the 17 Remington. Been doing this for over 30 years.
