Hard to say, not being able to "huff"[smell] the den hole.
While this practice may make you feel like the ultimate woodsman, it's not good practice. Depending on the area, you could be putting yourself (and family) in unnecessary peril. Small rodents could be holeing up in there. There is the chance you could fill your lungs with Hanta Virus (known to be fatal). Just getting on your hands and knees in front of the hole could lead to an infestation of Xenopsylla cheopis with a case of yersinia pestis. (That's tech talk for rodent fleas carrying bubonic plague.) And there's always the chance of sucking up a snot-locker full of Sarcoptes Scabiei. (Mange mites.)
That's just some of the microscopic dangers of "hole sniffing". I won't even go into rattlesnakes, badgers, skunks, and other assorted [beeep]-off animals that could be waiting to hand you your face on a platter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
