FOXPRO FX5

Just wondering what all you foxpro hunters do, do you keep both front and rear speakers on or use one at a time, if so which one and why?

Because of the sounds that I use, mostly prey sounds of distress and Fox vocalizations, I use only the front speaker. The rear speaker is designed for sounds of larger critters, like if I were to call elk or deer or mountain lions, bears with bear cub sounds.

Plus it is easier to play the sound cone(similiar to playing the wind) if it is only coming from one speaker. An incoming predator will align himself in the sweet spot of the sound cone, it's strongest-loudest-clearest.

Uses less battery power if only one speaker is on. Hope this helps!

In order to further clarify my sound cone statement above

Recently I was calling with a friend of mine, and had the caller set up with the front speaker(horn spkr) aimed out into an area where the corn stubble had been cut really-really low, offering good visibility for a clean shot. The rear of the caller was set back in some taller stubble. The fox came in but stayed in behind the rear of the FX5 and would not come out into the clearing. Offering no shot. When we broke the stand, Matt walked out and picked up the caller and noticed the rear(cone type) speaker had accidentally been turned on, so the fox came to the sound cone alright, just the wrong one. Dang it! I learned to check it now to make sure it is turned off.

I exclusively use the front speaker. Unless, the wind is really howling or I am trying to call 2 canyons at once.

I usually run both at the same time, I put the horn speaker toward the wind, this gets sound in two directions at once covering more area with sound, I have had coyotes come from miles out even with a heavy wind.

I never use the rear speaker on my FX5 but I do use a SP-55 external speaker on every stand. I use the big 12 volt battery so I don't have any battery power problems. Being able to adjust two good speakers how I want them can really help distribute the sound on some stands. I never have a speaker pointed back at me, they are always pointed away against the wind.

I run both. I doubt that it makes any difference either way. It just sounds better to me when both speakers are on and I can use it all day on a full charge, so why not.

me too

i have the fx3 the only time that i use the rear speaker is to make a sound more raspy (jackrabbit) but i almost always use cottontail and birds. even with howling it just gives it alittle deeper sound, in my opinion /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I also use both on my FX-5. Battery always lasts all day long. Never a problem.

I've always used both (FX3) until Mike did his seminar for us. Based on the sounds I use the cone is all I need and it saves battery life. I have never had it rundown on me though. Since sound travels in 360 degrees the one speaker is all I need.

HI,

if you pay for two spkrs, then why not use them..
if one has no intention of using the other spkr, then buy the foxpro caller that has only one spkr.then purchase an external one..
