Foxy stand last night

We’re in a winter thaw right now which is awesome. We have been pounded with snow for the last month. A couple days of above freezing and rain has compacted the snow so I had to get out.

First set at a horse boarding property got vocal responses from 2 different directions. Unfortunately both were distant and not properties I have access to.

Second set was a bit of a detour set. I couldn’t park due to huge snowbank at the place I wanted to try. I have permission across the road so I parked by the barn and made a setup. Big cut cornfield surrounded by timber to the east and brushy draw and hedgerows to the north. To the south is another brushy creek that separates this property from a small mobile home park. Winds were east southeast which was almost directly in my face. Not ideal, but with the brushy draw to the north I was hoping they would use that to try and get the wind. I let out some MFK Bougie Lonely howls and I see two heat signatures pop over the rise to the north. Perfect!… almost 🫤 I get in the gun and it’s a pair of gray fox. Okay… better than nothing. They both sit and stare towards the caller at about 175 yards. I don’t shoot fox so I let some more coyote vocals rip. They’re just sitting there watching for something to happen I guess. I’m scanning around and pick up another signature coming from the south brushy creek. I could tell immediately it was a red fox. It stops down in a low spot by the creek.

With nothing apparently interested as far as coyotes go I threw out a little distress to see if the foxes wanted to play for one, but mostly to see if coyotes were hungry. One of the grays advanced to about 125 yards and again took a seat. As I was scanning back towards the north I pick up the red sitting and staring at the caller at about 45 yards in front of me. As I continue to scan north there’s another red down by the creek pacing back and forth.

Cool stand, but no coyotes. A bunch of years back it would have been a different ending, let me tell you! Lol.

One more set after this one yielded nothing. Snow got super crunchy as the temps dropped so rather than alert everything for miles I called it a night. It was a much needed night out calling regardless of the outcome.

Similar results for me too Bob. Fairly warm last night here also (above freezing until late) as I sat scanning the opposite side of the lake by my bait station. Nothing happening for a while, a little while later the heat signature of 3 – 4 does that walked thru, then finally what sounded like a family pack fired up deeper in the woods just behind my bait pile.

I realize it’s usually just 2 – 3 but it sounded like 10 with all the barking, yipping, and howling. Got the heart going. They shut up, so now I’m watching thru the rifle thermal dead sure they’re coming for dinner. 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, …..nothing, silence. I tried vole squeaks and female howl to no avail.

I wonder if they’re getting smart to the fact that when a member of the family stops by the bait station for dinner they suddenly go MIA.

Nothing showed for the remainder of my evening. Trail cam showed the resident red fox stopped by unmolested at 4:00am for an early breakfast.

@Don_P I’m not one to sit a bait, but if I had coyotes fairly close vocalizing, I would have done more than just vole squeaks and a single howl. I would have tried to get them excited or pissed off. Being a bait setup I would have threw some social interaction sounds and a fight. Always gotta end a stand with some kind of pup distress.

But then again, I’m not you and Being a bait setup that has been paying off for you pretty regularly, maybe I should just shut up! 😂😉

Hope your thaw last so you can get some hunts in over the weekend Bob. I am thinkin there is a LUCKY fox on that farm for all the more you have got to hunt the last 2 winters. 😉😂

I can sit and watch a bait, doesn't take to much in the way of skill, now calling, which to use, and when to use it is what I need to learn. Thanks for the tips.

I've experienced this scenario a couple of times before and I stayed quiet thinking they know dinner is just a short distance from them and they'll be along any minute. Well... there was one lesson, being quiet doesn't work. When the situation presents itself again, and I'm sure it will, I'll try your suggestions.

Can't say I didn't see it today because I have a picture to prove I did.

You are probably correct that they know dinner is there. But they may have stopped for take out somewhere and just aren’t hungry right then. However, if they hear an uninvited stranger or two screwing around in their kitchen they may be inclined to investigate things. Make them think there are coyotes fighting over the food in their refrigerator that they planned on eating after a night of running around and they might run in to kick ass. Then if someone is whooping their kids or siblings… well, you just don’t mess with family! Lol….

Don’t be afraid to put some lengthy pauses in. Nothing is 100%, but if they’re close, I’m working on them. They may scream in, they may take their time very cautiously. You never know what’s going to trip their trigger.

We’ve lost a ton of snow which is great, and the warmup looks to stick around until Wednesday of this coming week. I really hope it knocks back the snowbanks thar are window high to my pickup! Weather is lousy for hunting this weekend. Wintry mix of rain and snow and 35-40 mph winds. Temps are supposed to plummet again midweek so hoping that’s the turning point.

As far as the fox go, i see quite a few. I just don’t find them very challenging anymore. I’m wondering if I should knock a few off simply as a management plan though. Four fox on the same set is a little crazy. I would have been in my glory 20 years ago to have had that stand. Hell, 10 years ago for that matter. Maybe I’ll talk to my fur guy and see if he wants them. He tans and sells decorative hanging hides. He’ll get inventory and I’ll get trigger time! :devilish:

Thanks Bob, that makes sense, I'll try that. I was just concerned that too much calling, or the wrong calling would create a smarter bunch than they already are.

Yeah, remember those days? You were super pleased when you saw you had caught a red fox, or even a grey in one of your sets. When I was trapping it was nothing for a prime red to bring $90 - $100. That was big money back then.

@Don_P I had thought about your concerns about calling and educating them. And maybe around bait stations it isn’t a great idea for continued success? Thats kinda why I said “If it were me” and “maybe I should shut up” in previous posts. 😂

I get pretty aggressive when I know they’re around. But I also have other properties to call if it doesn’t work out. I say use your own better judgment and do what is right for you and your setup. My above strategy is a calling strategy. You need to use baiting strategy, and I am not well versed in that.

I agree with your thoughts on the territorial possession of “their” food. What you said makes sense, make them think someone else is trying to move in. I’m going to try your call suggestions at least once, any more than that, if they did show up, and no one was there I believe would make them even more wary. Then again, if any did show up, they should be dead from gunshot wounds.:)
