Franchi 912 Variomax question.

I have just bought a barley used Frenchi 912 Variomax from a friend of a co-worker. The previous owner had patterned it and decided he didn't like it because it shot to the left. I think its an easy fix, just not sure how. There are shims with the gun to adjust the cast, but I'm not sure what cast is.

I'm pretty simple minded so let me know it this sounds correct. The shims are thicker on one side than the other. If the gun shoots to the left you must use the shim with the thicker side on the right. This will place the bead further to the left makeing you pull the barrel back to the right to line the bead up down the barrel when you shoulder the gun. Hence making you shoot closer to center.

I'm thinking its like a bow. When sighting it a bow you chase your arrow because you are moving your front sight and your back sight stays stationary. By putting a shim between your reciever and stock you move the front bead. The back sight is same because its your eye and its in the same place in relation to the stock.

Am I correct in this thinking?

Your basically correct.

Cast is to adjust the stock and how it's mated to the receiver so you get proper eye/sight alignment and cheekweld. Essentially it's to make the shotgun fit better to you if it doesn't as it comes from the factory and it can make a difference in point of impact if, when you mount the gun, you have a bad eye/sight alignment.
