This is what I have always done and it has worked very well, but...... I have recently built a 6x47L with a #5 barrel and have been told by a few in the know that a total free float with bedding from the lug rearward (action only) is the way to go.
Bedding and floating is complete as of this evening. We shall see. I figure if it won't shoot I can always re bed the 1 1/2 or so forward on the chamber and will see if it makes an improvement.
When I was a gunsmithing grasshopper, I was taught to bed 1.5" in front of the lug by the "Master".... but after a few years, I started bedding good rifles without the barrel touching anything, and they because more stable, and the "mystery" shots disappeared.
That bedded part of the barrel cannot support any weight, it only touches the barrel, and that varies with the position of the front sandbag or bi-pod.
